Dons Win In Overtime Against San Diego State

Box Score

SAN DIEGO – Senior forward Bryce Kaminski headed in the game winning goal in overtime to help the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (1-4-0) to a 2-1 win against host San Diego State (2-2-0) in the Courtyard Marriott San Diego Central Tournament on Friday night.

Kaminski's header came in the 94th minute off a set piece from Manny Padilla that found the top left corner of the net.

"It was a well-deserved team victory," said Dons head coach Eddie Soto.  "The players played with a lot of confidence, rhythm, tempo and you can see it in the stats.  We created a lot of chances and was finally able to breakthrough late when the goals finally came through."

While the Dons dominated the game, outshooting the Aztecs 28-to-7, including an 11-to-2 advantage on shots on goal, USF trailed 1-0 late in the game.  SDSU's Jeroen Meefout scored in the 58th minute off a corner kick, one of six corners by the Aztecs compared to 16 for the Dons.

"We just couldn't get a goal, hitting the post and missing breakaways.  I was proud that we didn't put our heads down after going down," said Soto.

USF finally broke through in the 84th minute.  Off a buildup on the right side, Leon Schwarzer sent a cross that Jorge Ruiz buried into the net through an open lane on the left side of the pitch. Ruiz's equalizer was the first goal of the season for the sophomore forward.

In overtime, the Dons continued to put the pressure on the Aztecs and was rewarded with Kaminski's game winner.  It was the senior's first goal of the season.

"Manny did a great job with the set piece and Bryce finished it.  The players showed a lot of grit and maturity today," said Soto.

Freshman goalkeeper Ruben Stuiver picked up his first win as a Don.  A total of six players had shots on goal with Kaminski leading the way with three.

USF now sets its eyes on playing Cal State Fullerton on Sunday, September 10 at 3 p.m. in a neutral site game on the campus of San Diego State.
