LAS VEGAS – The University of San Francisco women's golf team wrapped up the second round of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Monday at the Boulder Creek Golf Crouse with a 12-over 300. For the tournament, they are now in 11th place with a 12-over 588 (288-300).
The difference today was the Dons play on the short par-3s. Yesterday, USF was under par on the short holes, today they were 2-over as a team on par-3s averaging 3.05 per score. On the par-5s USF was still impressive, finishing 2-under for the day on the long holes. The Dons finished the day with 10 birdies as a team, and now have 30 for the tournament which ranks fourth through 36 holes.
Sophomore Pearl Rojanapeansatith is still the Dons leader after 36 holes. She finished the second round with a 4-over 76. For the tournament she is now tied for 27th with a 1-over 144 (69-76).
Junior Samantha Gong had the Dons' best round on the second day. Gong carded a 1-over 73 and after 36 holes she has moved up the leaderboard and is now tied for 33 with a 2-over 146 (73-73). She finished the back-9 even par with birdies on 10, 13, and 18. On the Front-9 where she finished her round, she sandwiched a birdy on two with a bogey on one and four to finish 1-over.
USF's two freshmen, Annika Borrelli and Jade Siphomsay finished back-to-back on day two. Borrelli finished the day with a 6-over 78 giving her a two-day score of 5-over 149 (71-78) which has her tied for 55th. Borrelli was one of three Dons with five birdies yesterday and carded two more giving her seven for the tournament.
Siphomsay backed up a solid first round with another solid round today. After 36 holes she is tied for 62nd with a 6-over 150 (75-75). She finished day two with a 3-over 75 that saw her open the round with a birdie on the par-5 fifth, she also birdied the par-3 12th.
Joan Soewondo finished her day tied for 68th with a 4-over 76 giving her a two-day score of 8-over 152 (76-76). On the front-9 she was 5-over, starting the round with a double bogey on the sixth. On the back-9 she was sharp playing par golf with the exception of her birdie on 17 to go 1-under.
COACH'S QUOTE
"We certainly had a more difficult day today on the course," said head coach Sara Doell. "Several members of the team just didn't seem as comfortable and confident as they were yesterday. Sam improved on yesterday's round - the ability to hit most par 5's in 2 really helps her on this course. We had a really great conversation after play and identified some areas that we can all get better on and look forward to finishing our fall season on a strong note tomorrow."
