Dons Look to Make it Four in a Row on Wednesday

The University of San Francisco men's basketball team is riding a three-game winning streak and looking to add to it when Northern Arizona comes to town on Wednesday night.  The game will be streamed live on TheW.tv with Pat Olson and Jim Brovelli on the call.  Fans can also hear Olson and Brovelli on the official home of USF Dons Basketball 1550-AM The GAME.

USF AT A GLANCE
  • USF looks to make it four in a row when they host Northern Arizona on Wednesday.  It will be the fifth matchup all-time between the two teams with each team claiming two wins.
  • After falling to No. 21 Buffalo in Belfast, the Dons have responded with three-straight wins by 14 or more.  USF now owns a win streak of nine games and four games and counting this season. 
  • USF was held to 68 points in their win over Cal State Fullerton - it is just the 11th time the Dons have won when scoring 69 or less in the Kyle Smith era - overall the Dons are 11-20 when being held to less than 70.
  • NAU are members of the Big Sky Conference – the Dons are 1-0 against Big Sky members after defeating Eastern Washington 85-63 on Dec. 13.
  • Kenpom.com has the Dons 45th as of Saturday afternoon - it is the highest the Dons have ever been rated in the history of the analytical site.
  • Dons in the Top-25 in the NET - the NCAA Evaluation Tool has the Dons 24th in the nation.  They are one of two teams from the WCC in the top-25. Gonzaga is currently 7th.  The WCC has six teams in the top-100 of the NET.
  • Four players are averaging 10 or more for the Dons this season, USF is led by redshirt sophomore Charles Minlend and his 14.4 points.  Frankie Ferrari (12.3) , Jordan Ratinho (12.2), followed by Matt McCarthy's 11.2. 
  • The Dons are averaging 79.5 ppg and holding opponents to 58.2 ppg - the +21.4 scoring margin is eighth best in the nation.
  • USF has shot 50.0 or better from the field in six of the 10 games.  Last year USF shot 50.0 or better just six times all season.
  • The Dons are putting teams away this season, in nine of the Dons 10 wins they have won by 14 or more, including a four-straight by 32 or more to being the season.
 
THE SERIES
Wednesday will be the fifth time the Dons and Lumberjacks have squared off.  Both teams owns a pair of wins in the series.  At home, USF is 2-0 against NAU.  The series dates back to Dec. 21, 2005 when the Dons lost to the Jacks 70-66 at the Arizona State Tournament in Tempe, Ariz.  In the Dons two wins they have won by at least nine, their largest win was a 19 point victory in 2011, the largest loss was a 24 point affair on Dec. 5, 2006.  
 
ABOUT THE LUMBERJACKS
Northern Arizona enters Wednesday's contest 2-6 and have lost five straight.  On the road, NAU is 1-5 their lone road win was against Omaha 76-66 on Nov. 14.  Last time out, the Lumberjacks were defeated by San Jose State 79-74 on Dec. 15. NAU sports a -7 scoring margin and is averaging 74.8 ppg, while surrendering 81.8.  Four players are averaging better than 10 points per game, leading the team is Carlow Hines at 14.1 points per contest.  Second on the team is Bernie Andrew who is averaging 13.5 points per contest.  Against SJSU he scored a team-high 21 points.
 
LAST GAME AGAINST NORTHERN ARIZONA
The last time NAU and the Dons faced each other was on Nov. 12, 2011 when USF came away with the 69-50 win over the Lumberjacks at Day Two of the 2011 Hilltop Challenge. In that game, USF had three in double figures and was led by former Don Michael Williams who finished with 16.  The Dons went into the locker room nursing a 2-point advantage, coming out of the break they put up 41 points and held NAU to 24 to run away with it. Rasheed Green and Cole Dickerson were the other Dons to finish in double figures.  Green had 11, Dickerson had 12.
