SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco men's basketball team got back to .500 in the WCC thanks to a spectacular second half in the Dons 72-63 win over visiting Loyola Marymount on Saturday. The win capped off the Dons first 2-0 week in WCC play for USF this season.
USF (16-13, 8-8 WCC) scored 43 points after the intermission, their second largest point total in the second half this season. Leading the Dons, was junior guard
Frankie Ferrari, who finished with a team-high 17 points, while dishing out six assists. Ferrari was the catalyst for the Dons, going 6-for-9 from the floor. He scored 11 of his 17 points after the break.
Joining Ferrari in double figures was
Chase Foster and
Jimbo Lull. Foster scored some huge buckets for the Dons early. He finished the game 3-for-5 from beyond the arc. Lull scored 10 points and grabbed four rebounds in another spectacular performance in the post.
The Dons, trailed by five midway through the opening half, but a jumper by Lull put the Dons out front for good 16-15. The contest featured five ties and eight lead changes, but none after Lull's bucket. The Dons led for 30 minutes in the contest, LMU tied the game three times in the second half but could never get the lead.
A big reason for that was the play of
Nate Renfro. The junior co-captain finished with a team-high 10 rebounds and three blocks to go along with his five points. The Dons needed Renfro's play, as LMU (8-19, 3-13 WCC) had the advantage in rebounds, grabbing 17 offensive rebounds giving LMU 13 second chance points.
