DAVIS, Calif. -- The University of San Francisco men's tennis team were downed by the UC Davis Aggies, 4-2, on Saturday, Feb. 3 at the Marya Welch Tennis Center. The Dons now hold a 2-2 record and are 0-2 in away matches.
"Davis did a good job hanging in there today," said head coach Pablo Pires de Almeida. "We were disappointed with our guys effort and we need to do better. Mert [Zincirli] and Oliver [Poysti] displayed gritty performances and earned solid wins."
At first serve, the Dons started the match with a win over the Aggies. Zincirli and Johan Joenhagen won their battle 6-2. Ryan Marker and Paul Giraud were unable to build off that momentum in their doubles dual and dropped the matchup. Lucas Marinelli and Poysti fought hard on the court, but dropped the doubles point with a 7-6 loss.
In singles play, the Aggies earned wins over Giraud (6-4, 6-2) and Marinelli (6-4, 6-0). The Dons fought hard for a comeback with wins from Poysti (6-4,6-4) and Zincirli (6-2, 7-5). It came down to the last two single matches for the Dons, but the Aggies took the last two matches, and the Dons dropped the game 4-2.
The Dons now move to 2-2 on the season following the loss to Davis.
