BSB | USF Score Big to Even Series with Xavier

THE RUNDOWN
SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco's baseball team evened their weekend series against Xavier with 8-2 win on Friday.

USF got the scoring going in the first inning when Mike Perri launched a solo home run to left center field. Thomas Ponticelli got the start today, keeping the Musketeers off the board for five innings, striking out four in that span.

In the sixth inning, Xavier took the lead in the bottom half of the inning. Back-to-back singles by the Musketeers put runners in scoring position with no outs, with the second single moving the runner over to third. The next batter up hit into a fielder's choice that allowed the runner at third to score to even the score at 1-1. After getting the next batter out, Ponticelli gave up a jam shot double down the right field line, allowing the second run to cross the plate.

The Dons took the lead back in the bottom half of the sixth inning scoring four. Tyler Villaroman walked to lead off the inning, and the advanced to third on a one-out double from Riley Helland. The Musketeers intentionally walked Mike Perri to bring up Ross Puskarich with the bases loaded. The senior first baseman made them pay, launching a grand slam deep in the left center field making the score 5-2, USF.

Jonathan Allen drove in one run in the bottom of the seventh, extending the Dons lead to 6-2. USF added another two in the bottom of the eighth through a triple from Nick Yovetich that scored Perri, then Yovetich was driven by a double from Aaron Ping.

Grant Goodman came on in the ninth to close out the game getting three quick outs to move the Dons to 7-6 on the season.
