The Rundown
Stanford, Calif. - The University of San Francisco Dons (24-21) baseball team fell in a tough non-conference game against No. 2 Stanford (34-6), 5-2.
Â
Stanford would open the scoring in the first inning, bringing in one run. With two-outs and a runner on second, a ground ball to
Jack Winkler at third would see the freshman make a long throw over to
Ross Puskarich at first base that the senior would mishandle. The runner on second would come around to score and make it 1-0, Stanford.
Â
After a scoreless second, Stanford would add another three runs in the third inning. A ground out and a strike out would have the Dons an out away from another scoreless inning, but Stanford's Will Matthiessen would hit a three-run home run over the left field fence to make it 4-0.
Â
Stanford would add another run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch from
Bo Jelinek, allowing the runner on second to advance to third and the runner from third to score and make it 5-0.
Â
USF would get a run across in the seventh inning, after
Brady Bate worked an eleven pitch walk with two-outs, the senior would come around to score on back-to-back singles from Winkler and
Robert Emery to cut the Stanford lead to 5-1.
Â
After the fourth inning, the Dons pitching staff would work four scoreless innings through a combination of
Haydn King,
Alex Pham,
Grant Young and
Brendan Jenkins. Those four would allow just three hits while registering five strike outs.
Â
The Dons would cut the Stanford lead to 5-2 in the eighth inning. After
Jonathan Allen would hit a one-out double that would one hop the right field wall,
Riley Helland would single into center field to bring Allen around to score from second.
Â
The Dons are now 24-21 and will head down to Malibu to take on Pepperdine in a pivotal three-game West Coast Conference series.
