Dons Open Season at Montana Cup

The University of San Francisco women's soccer opens the 2018 regular season at the Montana Cup this week.  The Dons will take on Drake on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and tournament host Montana on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for both contests.

TOMORROW'S GAME
USF, picked to finish sixth in the WCC Preseason Coaches' poll, begins its 2018 season on Friday when it takes on Drake in the first of a two-match tournament played over the weekend.  The Dons and Bulldogs kick off at 1:30 p.m. PST, the match will feature live stats and video which can be accessed on the women's soccer schedule page.
 
Drake was picked fourth in the 2018 MVC Preseason Coaches' Poll, the Bulldogs return 17 letterwinners, including five starters from last year's squad that won the 2017 Missouri Valley Conference Championships.  Two key returners for the Bulldogs are senior midfielder Alyssa Brand and sophomore forward Hannah Bormann.  Brand is a three-time All-MVC honoree who finished 2017 with eight points on two goals and four assists.  Bormann was the 2017 MVC Freshman of the Year after finishing the year with 10 points on three goals and four assists.
 
THE SERIES
This is the first time the two teams have met.    

SUNDAY'S GAME
Montana went 10-7-4 last season, its fourth consecutive year with nine or more wins.  In the Big Sky Conference, the Grizzlies went 5-2-3 last season.  Heading into the 2018 season Montana was picked to finish third in the conference standings in the preseason coaches' poll.  The Grizzlies return 11 letterwinners from last season, including eight starters.  Top returners include senior forward/midfielder Hallie Widner a second team All-BSC honoree, and senior defender Taryn Miller the BSC Defensive Player of the Year. 
 
THE SERIES
The Dons and Grizzlies have faced each other just one time, on Nov. 1, 1996 with USF earning a 1-0 win in the contest. 

UP NEXT
Following this weekend's series, the Dons will return to the Bay Area to take on Stanford on Friday, Aug. 24 at 8:00 p.m. down on the Farm.  USF makes its 2018 home debut on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 12:30 p.m. against Harvard.  Tickets for that game are available at Dons Ticket Central.
