Dons Race Past Cougars for 16th Win

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco men's basketball team started out hot and never relented and in the end the Dons came away with an emphatic 82-63 over visiting BYU on Saturday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Five Dons finished in double-figures, as USF (16-3, 4-1 WCC) shared the ball beautifully. Frankie Ferrari recorded a team-high 21 points and seven assists, Jamaree Bouyea was second best with 15 (7-for-10), Matt McCarthy had 14 (7-for-8), Charles Minlend put up 13 (5-for-12), and Jordan Ratinho recorded 10 (4-for-7).
USF was incredibly efficient from the field, the Dons shot a season-high 63.6 percent from the floor going 35-for-55, from long range they were deadly connecting on 47.4 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc.
The Cougars (12-9, 4-2 WCC) made it interesting to start the second half, after scoring six quick field goals to trim its lead to six points, 53-47. The Dons started out the period shooting a sluggish 4-for-10 from the field. Minlend's strong finish to the basket at the 12:47 mark boosted the Dons momentum, sparking a 15-2 run thanks to Minlend (5) Bouyea (4), McCarthy (4) and Ratinho (2). In the final minutes of play, Ferrari put on show and knocked down 10 points which included two 3-pointers to seal the Dons victory.
It was a competitive start between the Dons and the Cougars as they both were knotted up, 15-15 with just 10 minutes into the game. Minlend (5), Lull (6) and Renfro (3) led the Dons offense with its first points. Like always, the Dons fast paced offense found its rhythm and went on a 16-0 run with huge contributions from Renfro, Ferrari, Bouyea, Ratinho and McCarthy. From there, the Dons never looked back. McCarthy extended the Dons run to 22-6 after dominating the paint with four straight layups. BYU's major set back in the first half was after they missed 12 shots in a row and were scoreless for over seven minutes.

- With the win, the Dons snapped an 11-game losing streak at the hands of BYU. The last time USF defeated the Cougars came on Feb. 9, 2013 when the Dons won 99-87 in Provo.
- USF's blistering 63.6 percent from the field was a season-high for USF. The Dons have shot 50.0 percent or better seven times this season. Last year, USF shot 50.0 percent or better in just six games all season.
- The Dons went 9-for-19 from beyond the arc tonight, with the win the Dons improve to 9-0 this season and 41-15 when making at least eight 3-point field goals.
- USF's 4-1 start in WCC play is their best since the 2013-14 season. That year the Dons 13-5 in WCC play.
