SAMMAMISH, Wash. – Sloppy and wet conditions hampered the University of San Francisco women's golf team as they battled through 18 holes at the opening round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational hosted by Washington at the par-72 Sahalee Country Club. The Dons finished the day with a 24-over 312 and had two players finish in the top-25.
"Conditions were very difficult today," said head coach Sara Doell. "We had hail, thunder, lightning, and two weather delays. Steady rain all day made the course very soggy and despite all of this the team played through and had good attitudes after having to take two breaks. We are looking forward to tomorrow as we have a new game plan and want to move up the leader board."
Junior Pearl Rojanapeansatith led the Dons with a 2-over 74 on the day, which has her tied for third place. The junior's strong play continues as she carded a pair of birdies and played largely mistake free golf. Her 13 pars on the day is tied for second most among all participants.
"It was a really tough day today but I managed to hit some solid tee shots and approach shots which gave me opportunities for birdie," said Rojanapeansatith. "I was also able to save par a few times which gave me momentum to get through the round."
Sophomore Jade Siphomsay finished second for USF, she sits in 22nd after shooting a 5-over 77. Siphomsay was 2-over on the front-9 and birdied the sixth. On the back-9 she finished 3-over. Samantha Gong finished one shot back Siphomsay, with a 6-over 78 which has her sitting in 28th.
Annika Borrelli and Joan Soewondo finished tied at 51st, both shooting 11-over 83s.
UC Davis is in the lead after 18 holes, the Aggies shot a 9-over 297, the only team under 300 to begin the tournament. The individual leaders are UCD's Rei Nakatani and Seattle's Kimberlee Tottori who shot even par-72s.
The tournament has been shortened to 36 holes due to the weather. Round one was completed today and round two will be played tomorrow. The Dons will tee off at 8:40 a.m. and will be partnered with Seattle and Idaho.
