WSOC | Dons Battle No. 4 BYU to Brink in Double Overtime

SAN FRANCISCO – In the 80th minute Ashley Humphrey gave the home crowd a shot of adrenaline with a game-tying goal late in regulation that eventually forced overtime.  Unfortunately for the Dons (10-6-2/3-3-1 WCC), No. 4 BYU (16-0-1/6-0-1 WCC) scored early in the second overtime to earn the 2-1 victory on the game winner by SaraJayne Affleck in the 102nd minute.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The two sides went into the locker room knotted up at 0-0.  The keepers for both squads put on a clinic in the opening half.  Olivia Camera finished with six saves in the opening period, while her counterpart Sabrina Davis had four saves in the first half.  USF finished the half with 11 shots, which was equal to the output by the Cougars.

• Midway through the second half, the Cougars broke the scoreless tie when Elise Flake scored her 16th goal of the season.  Flake took a long pass then beat a pair of Dons' defenders to set up a 1v1 against Camera and beat her with a shot to the low right corner of the goal.

• Late in regulation, the Dons got even.  Samantha Jehnings sent a cross to the right side of the net where Keely Roy put a shot on goal that bounced back to Humphrey, who blasted the ricochet to the back of the net for her seventh goal of the season.

• The two sides traded shots but eventually the game went into overtime.  In the first overtime period the Dons had their chances.  USF had two great looks, the second of which saw Miciah Madison alone with just BYU's keeper in front of her but Davis recorded the miraculous save – her seventh of the evening, to send the game into double overtime.

• In the second overtime, both sides missed opportunities to put the game away in the opening minute.  BYU did not miss its second chance.  In the 102nd minute Affleck took the pass from Lizzy Braby and beat Camera for the game-winning goal.
