SAN FRANCISCO – The University of San Francisco women's soccer team struck first, but a trio of goals by visiting Pepperdine in the middle of the first half was the difference as the Waves (10-6-2/6-2-0 WCC) defeated the Dons (10-7-2/3-4-1 WCC) 3-2 on Wednesday evening at a foggy Negoesco Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Dons struck first when
Samantha Jehnings took a touch pass from
Keely Roy inside the penalty box and blasted it past the Waves keeper who had no shot at that close range at the 20
th minute.
• The Dons 1-0 advantage did not last long. The Waves scored three goals in a six minute span from the 30
th minute to the 36
th. Joelle Anderson scored both of the Waves first goals on assists by Devyn Gilfoy. In both goals, Gilfoy and Anderson passed back and forth before Anderson found herself with open looks on the night inside the box. Trinity Watson scored the third goal in the 36h minute on a free kick from the top of the box.
• USF wasted little time responding, cutting the Waves lead in half when
Miciah Madison sent a header past the keeper on a corner kick by
Keely Roy in the 36
th minute. It was Roy's second assist of the contest, for Madison it was her ninth goal of the season and 18
th of her career.
• In the second half a thick layer of fog permeated around the field making visibility difficult. Neither side added anymore goals, but the Waves defense did their job limiting the Dons to six shots with two on goal that were saved by keeper Kinsey Ehmann.
• USF paid tribute to six spectacular student-athletes in a pregame ceremony on Wednesday night. Playing their final game at Negoesco Stadium was
Olivia Camera,
Izzie Lueken,
Kristina Krehbiel,
