VB | Dons Honor Five on Senior Day

SAN FRANCISCO — Five University of San Francisco volleyball seniors were honored Saturday in a pre-match ceremony before the Dons' West Coast Conference match, recognizing three indoor players and two beach players for their time with the program, while the Waves came away with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-19) win at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Francisco (8-20, 4-13 WCC) made its best push in the second set, leading as late as 19-17 and trying to tie the match at 1-1. The Dons had used a 5-0 run early on to go ahead by four at 12-8, forcing Pepperdine (18-10, 14-3 WCC) to call a timeout. The Waves responded with a 4-1 spurt, but the Dons scored three of the next four points to go back up 16-13. The Waves finally got over the hump with four consecutive points to take a 21-19 lead. Two kills, a block and an ace from Shannon Scully put them up for good.

  • Pepperdine started the third set with four blocks and a 6-0 run. They had five blocks in the final set and 11 in the match. The Dons went on their own 6-0 run midway through thanks in part to three errors from the Waves and an ace from Erin Fujitani. San Francisco held Pepperdine to progressively worse hitting percentages in the match, going from .306 in the opening frame to .093 in the third.

  • San Francisco competed early in the third set, leading 4-3 on the back of kills from Kathya Garcia and Emily Zinger. But as it would do throughout the match, Pepperdine went on a 6-0 run to gain control with a 9-4 lead. Another 9-1 stretch later – including six kills from Scully – pushed that lead to 10 at 18-8. The Waves ran away at the end with a 6-1 run that included four kills from three different players.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 8th: Anna Dalla Vecchia's 17 digs Saturday put her season total at 451 – which is the eighth-most all-time in a single season at San Francisco.
  • 10: Victoria Rogers tied a career high with a team-leading 10 kills Saturday. It was her first double-digit kills performance of the year, and it came with a team-best .333 hitting percentage.
COMING UP
