Toreros Outlast Dons In Overtime

SAN FRANCISCO — With 4.4 seconds San Diego's Olin Carter III heaved a prayer from half court that banked in sending the contest to overtime. In extra time, after jumping out to an early lead in overtime the University of San Francisco men's basketball team was held scoreless over the final 2:09 and the Toreros stunned the Dons, winning 91-90 on Thursday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.

USF (21-8, 9-6 WCC) led by as much as 10 with three minutes to go in regulation, free throws down the stretch doomed the Dons,. USF did not have an answer for the duo of Isaiah Pineiro and Isaiah Wright who combined to score 52 of San Diego's 91 points. Pineiro led all scorers with 28 points, including all nine of USD's (18-12, 7-8 WCC) points in overtime.

The Dons finished with five players in double-figures with Charles Minlend recording his fifth 20-point game of the season, scoring a team-high 22 points. Frankie Ferrari scored 18, Jordan Ratinho and Dzymitry Ryuny both recorded 14 followed by Nate Renfro who had 10.  Ryuny had a coming out party, he finished with a career-bests in points (14) and minutes played (21). He opened the game 4-for-4 from the field and 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. 

After trailing 41-36 at the half, USF broke away in the second half with a strong 10-4 run to start the second period, going out front 46-45 with 16:14 left to go in the game. Minutes later, the Dons held an advantage when they drew seven straight fouls in the first eight minutes of second half and were in the bonus the rest of the game.

At 8:04 minute mark, USF took its biggest lead of the game over the Toreros when Jordan Ratinho knocked down a jump shot inside the perimeter. It was all up to the charity line for both teams when they combined 29 free throws with less than eight to go. The Dons finished 24-for-32 from the charity stripe a season-high for made free throws. Ferrari alone was 8-for-10 from the line.

After the Dons gained their 10-point lead in the game, 75-65, San Diego began chipping away at the lead, starting with Carter's finished a layup off of Minlend turnover at the 1:22 minute mark. USF's free throws weren't enough with seconds left in the period after Carter showed up once again and knocked down two key shots from beyond the arc. One coming at .09 seconds left to cut the Dons lead down to three points, 82-79 and then right at the buzzer to tie the game 82-82.

In overtime USF took a five point lead, 90-85 from points from Minlend, Ratinho and Ferrari. The Toreros 6-0 run made up of free throw shooting and aggressive defense over the Dons for over two minutes of play was the ultimate advantage as they sealed their road overtime victory.

UP NEXT:
San Francisco will complete its regular season schedule versus Loyola Marymount on Saturday at 1 p.m. at War Memorial. The Dons will be honor its four seniors: Frankie Ferrari, Nate Renfro, Michael Orlich, Matt McCarthy in a post game ceremony following the end of the game.
