BASE | Greim, Arms Help Even Series with Game 2 Victory

SAN FRANCISCO — Brandon Greim seems to be settling in just fine this week.

Making his third start in three games Saturday, Greim posted his second multi-hit performance of the week and hit his first career home run while driving in two to back up a couple of strong performances on the mound, as the University of San Francisco baseball team evened its West Coast Conference series versus visiting Loyola Marymount with a 3-2 win at Benedetti Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Each of Greim's RBIs on Saturday kept the Dons ahead and were eventually the game winners, as Loyola Marymount (19-11, 8-3 WCC) tried to slowly work its way back after USF (18-12, 7-4 WCC) had taken a 1-0 lead in the first. Greim hit a soaring solo home run off the high netting in right field for his first career home run and a 2-0 Dons lead in the second. And when LMU scored its first run in the fourth inning to make it 2-1, Greim gave it back to the Dons in the bottom half with a solid RBI single to center field to put them back up by two at 3-1.

  • Like Friday's series opener, LMU was not without its chances on Saturday. After stranding 14 runners in game one, the Lions stranded seven more in game two, including four in scoring position. The Lions were 2 for 6 with runners in scoring position Saturday after going 2 for 11 Friday.

  • Both of LMU's runs came with two outs. A walk, a chopper single back to the pitcher, and an RBI single by Tommy Delgado through the right side of the infield gave the Lions their first run in the fourth. It was three consecutive two-out singles in the fifth that made it a one-run game again, as Cooper Uhl drove home Dylan Hirsch to make it 3-2.

  • San Francisco starter Scott Parker (4-2) won his third consecutive start with 5 1/3 innings of work, limiting LMU to two runs and striking out a career-high nine. He had at least one strikeout in every inning he pitched, and he was perfect the first time through the Lions' batting order, retiring the first nine he faced. Alex Pham earned his third save of the season with 3 2/3 innings of shutout ball, only allowing two hits and striking out seven.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • 0: The Dons have not committed an error during this weekend's series. In 75 total chances across the two games, USF has a flawless 1.000 fielding percentage. They had committed at least one error in seven of their previous eight games entering the series.
  • .600: Greim is batting .600 (6 for 10) in his three starts this week. He has three RBIs , two runs scored, two doubles and a home run for the week.
  • 16: Parker and Pham combined to strike out 16 Lions. It was the second-most strikeouts in a single game for the Dons' staff since striking out 21 in 13 innings against UC Riverside on March 10. Pham had 11 Ks in that game.
COMING UP
  • The series concludes with the rubber match at 1 p.m. Sunday. USF righty Grant Nechak is scheduled to throw against a yet-to-be-announced LMU starter. Fans can purchase tickets and find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
