NAPA, Calif. – Junior Samantha Gong was the lone member of the University of San Francisco women's golf team to crack the top-50 at the opening round of the Silverado Showdown co-hosted by Colorado and Oregon at the North Course at the Silverado Resort & Spa on Sunday.
The Dons finished the opening round with a 24-over 312 to finish 18th at the par-72 course. Gong finished the afternoon tied for 44th with a 4-over 76. Gong was one of three Dons to record a pair of birdies, she carded two in the first nine holes.
In second for the Dons was Pearl Rojanapeansatith who finished tied for 58 with a 5-over 77. Annika Borrelli was tied for 66th with a 6-over 78. Joan Soewondo was tied for 83rd with a 9-over 81 followed by Jade Siphomsay who finished tied for 87th with a 10-over 82.
Northwestern's Stephanie Lau and Brooke Riley are the co-leaders after 18, finishing with 2-under 70s. Only nine players finished the opening round under par. San Jose State is the team leader after the first round with a 1-over 289 – no teams finished under par.
"I'm really proud of the team today - they battled hard and their scores do not reflect the effort I saw," said assistant coach Devin Dougherty. "We're in an elite field, with 11 teams ranked in the top-50 so it's a great experience for our young team. We have some work left to do and will rest tonight in order to prepare for tomorrow."
The Dons will return to action tomorrow morning with the second round beginning at 7:45 a.m.
