BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — For the second straight match, the University of San Francisco volleyball team took a lead only to see its opponent come from behind and steal a victory, as host CSU Bakersfield came back Saturday from a 2-1 deficit to beat the Dons, 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 22-25, 25-18, 15-10), in the first match of the Roadrunner Classic at the Icardo Center.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Tied 20-20, the Roadrunners (4-6) scored five of the last seven points of the first set to go ahead in the match, 1-0. Three of those final five points came via blocks, with Brooke Boiseau involved in all three of them, as the Roadrunners took the first, 25-22.
Â
- San Francisco (4-5) and CSU Bakersfield were tied, 13-13, midway through the second when the Dons went on a 5-1 run to put them ahead for good. Back-to-back kills by Kathya Garcia and a kill and block from Katie Wagstaff gave USF four consecutive points in that run to put it ahead, 17-13, before going on to even the match with a 25-20 set victory.
Â
- Though it was close the whole way, the Dons led the entire third set until CSU Bakersfield scored three straight points to go up, 20-19. But they responded by scoring six of the last eight points, thanks in part to four attack errors by the Roadrunners, as USF grabbed a 2-1 match lead with a 25-22 win in the third frame.
Â
- That's when the San Francisco offense went cold. The Dons hit .000 in the fourth set (eight kills, eight errors on 52 attempts) and .188 in the deciding fifth set. Meanwhile, the Roadrunners' offense clutched up in the deciding fifth, hitting a match-best .412. After CSU Bakersfield used a 7-0 run midway through the fourth to win, 25-18, and even the match at 2-2, it never trailed in the fifth en route to clinching the match victory.
