SAN FRANCISCO – When freshman forward
Jumoke Adaramoye hit a jumper in the paint with 1:12 remaining the University of San Francisco women's basketball team erupted. USF was able to unload its bench tonight, with everyone scoring, in a lopsided 87-47 win over visiting William Jessup on Friday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
USF (3-2) made it three wins in a row with the starters leaving no doubt as to how this contest would go. The Dons led for 39:39 seconds when
Ioanna Krimili hit a 3-point field goal on USF's first possession. Krimili was one of four Dons in double figures and one of 13 players to score at least one field goal. A 13-0 run by the Dons was the catalyst for the win. William Jessup was held without a field goal for the first eight minutes of the contest.
"I thought that was a really nice game overall," said head coach
Molly Goodenbour. "To get our whole roster involved in the game, get them some meaningful minutes, that's going to help us down the line. I thought even at the very end the group that finished out the game, did a really good job of being engaged and playing good defense. They played good transition offense and created a lot of opportunities on fast break points, I really enjoyed watching them."
USF finished with a season-high 22 fast break points. The Dons also got a season-best performance inside the key where they scored 54 of their 87 points. As a team, USF shot 54.7 percent from the field going 35-for-64. USF's bench was big part of it, scoring 46 of the Dons 87 points.
Julia Nielacna finished with 15 points going 6-for-10 from the field. Krimili added 13,
Abby Rathbun had a season-high 12 points - 10 coming in the first half, and
Marta Galic had 10 along with five rebounds and four steals.
Sophia Persson matched her season-high with eight points,
Marija Galic had four,
Kia Vaalavirta had a triple as well,
Rain Sheh went 1-for-3 from the field and scored her first collegiate basket. Her classmate
Jumoke Adaramoye was 1-for-2 from the field and made her collegiate debut with five minutes of action.
"Everyone had a chance to play everyone, got on the scoreboard kids are cheering for one another. It's a great game to have as we get ready or our final non-conference game against Sacramento State on Tuesday. The Hornets are a really good rivalry for us, they play really up tempo basketball, shoot a lot of threes," added Goodenbour.
William Jessup (2-6) was held without a double-digit scorer. Leading the team in points was Paige Winter and Aycee Williss who had eight each. The Warriors shot 36.2 percent from the field.
"I think that's really important – we do have 15 players even the ones who are 9-10-11 through 15 on the depth chart are really capable players," said Goodenbour when asked if a game like this has positive long term impact on the team. "I think we have a really good group and sometimes in tight games they aren't really rewarded for their hard work in practice. I do think it has a big impact getting our reserve players those significant minutes. Hopefully this gives our bench players some confidence that when we need them they can come in and hit some shots for us."
The Dons will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Sacramento State to take on the Hornets. That game is slated to tipoff at 5:00 p.m.
George Devine will have the call on the Dons Audio Network.
