SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's golf team finished in 11th place at the Bruin-Wave Invitational on Tuesday. The Dons were led by freshman Toni Sottile who turned in her second consecutive top-25 finish.
The Dons finished the two day tournament with a 32-over 320 to finish with a team score of 939 (310-309-320). Low scores were hard to come by on the final day, the low round of the tournament went to Oregon who finished 2-over as a team. Only five players finished the tournament at par or better after 54 holes.
"Tough day for us today," said head coach Sara Doell. "We struggled to get a groove as a team. I would be remiss if didn't mention how great Toni played. She had her best performance to date in a collegiate event and played solidly all week. If there is one thing I know about this team, it is that they are resilient. We will regroup and look to work towards our home event in a few weeks."
Sottile, the native of Thousand Oaks, Calif., climbed three spots on the leaderboard on the final day after turning in a 3-over 75. For the tournament, she finished with an 11-over 227 (76-76-75).
After a bogey on 10 to begin the round, Sottile birdied the par-4 12th to pull even. She went into the final four holes even par after recording 11-straight pars. A bogey on six and a double on seven were the lone blemishes of her otherwise stellar round.
Annika Borrelli finished tied at 28th with a 13-over 229 (73-77-79). Pearl Rojanapeansatith finished in third for the Dons with a 22-over 238 (78-75-84) which was tied for 50th. Freshman Hannah Zeman finished her first collegiate tournament in 58th with a 31-over 247 (82-81-84). Samantha Gong finished in 60th with a 39 over 255 (86-87-82).
No. 2 USC was the team champion for the fifth time in the tournaments 11 year history. The Trojans finished with a 14-over 878 (300-282-296). The co-medalists were Emma Spitz of UCLA and Kelly Sim of Northwestern. The two finished 5-under 211.
The Dons will return to action on Monday, Mar. 9 when USF co-hosts the Juli Inkster at Meadow Club with San Jose State. The two day tournament will be held at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
