SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – For the first time since 1975, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (9-0, 0-0) defeated UNLV (4-5, 0-0) at home on the Hilltop as the Dons cruised past the Runnin' Rebels, 83-62, on Saturday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center to remain perfect.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Finding his rhythm right out of the gates, guard Jamaree Bouyea scored the first twelve points of the evening for the Dons on four straight threes to open the contest as USF led 12-4 at 15:56 in the first half following this impressive stretch.
- Battling back, UNLV remained close as a jumper from Bryce Hamilton at the 11:00 mark trimmed their deficit to just three, 22-19. Less than one minute later, Zane Meeks returned to the hardwood to convert on his first basket since opening night against LIU and keep the Dons on top by five, 24-19.
- As the half continued, USF pushed their advantage to double digits, 32-22, on a successful three-point play from Yauhen Massalski, who sunk his free throw after throwing down a two-handed slam on an assist from Gabe Stefanini at 7:45.
- Answering back once again, UNLV responded to end the half by closing their gap to single digits, but the Dons were able to ride a five-point lead into the locker room at the half time break, 40-35.
- Similar to the beginning of the ballgame, USF came out firing from distance as Khalil Shabazz nailed a corner three in transition to get the scoring started in the second half and put the Dons up by eight, 43-35.
- Applying pressure offensively, USF jumped back in front by ten, 55-45, on another triple from Bouyea at 11:32. Shortly thereafter, the Seaside native made history as he cashed in on his eighth three-pointer of the night at the 8:47 mark to keep the Dons rolling, 64-48, and tie the USF record for three-pointers made in a single game.
- Using the strength of their home crowd to fuel their energy on both sides of the floor, the Runnin' Rebels would not go down without a fight, but the Dons were ultimately able to defend their home court and remain perfect on the Hilltop as USF would go on to hang on without much problem, 83-62.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Recording a new season-high with 30 points, Bouyea's eight made triples marked a new career-high while also tying Tomas Thomason, who hit eight from beyond-the-arc against Loyola Marymount on Mar. 7, 1992. Overall, the fifth-year guard finished 11-of-17 from the field and 8-of-10 from deep while also adding five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and one steal.
- Dominating down low, Massalski logged his second straight double-double by pouring in 18 points and grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds in 25 minutes played. Additionally, the forward also tallied three assists, two blocks and one steal in the win.
- Rounding out the backcourt, Shabazz finished with 12 points, a game-high six steals and four assists on 5-of-12 from the floor and 2-of-7 from deep.
- As a team, USF led UNLV in points in the paint (42-26), points off turnovers (15-6) and fast break points (8-4).
