SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco volleyball team made it four West Coast Conference wins in a row Wednesday, completing its first season sweep of Pacific with a four-set, 3-1 (24-26, 25-22, 25-17, 25-20) triumph at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Â
The Dons (4-2) extended their win streak to four in a row – their longest win streak in WCC play since 2013 (a streak that also included a win over Pacific). Wednesday's win coupled with Tuesday's five-set victory in Stockton marked the Dons' first season sweep over the Tigers (1-3) since they rejoined the WCC for the 2013 season.
Â
Good, solid performance coming back after a five-set win," said San Francisco head coach
Frank Lavrisha. "Pacific had to kind of get us going for us to wake up and play. It's probably our best workman-like match in a while, to take care of business."
Â
The Dons dropped a close first set to Pacific. The Tigers led 20-15, but San Francisco actually fought back with a 5-0 run to take a 22-21 lead. USF was on the verge of taking the first set with a 24-23 advantage, but Pacific did to it what USF did in the fourth set Tuesday, scoring each of the final three points to win, 26-24.
Â
San Francisco tightened things up from there to win three sets in a row and take the match. The Dons held Pacific to a .000 hitting percentage in the second set, .028 in the third and -.023 in the fourth for a .031 match hitting percentage. Meanwhile, they topped their first set hitting performance (.167) in each of the final three sets, including a match-best .393 in the third.
Â
"We're just better now," said Lavrisha. "We're going to match up better now with some teams that are younger like Pacific. From a historical perspective, (the sweep) is great, but we just want to take it one match at a time and how can we help ourselves get better so when we play the more veteran teams, we can compete better."
Â
McKenna Marshall led all players with 15 kills, her sixth double-digit kills performance in as many contests.
Anna Dalla Vecchia led USF with 14 digs while fellow Italians
Irene Abbruciati (11) and
Greta Corti (10) also notched double-figure digs. The Dons' defense had 11 total blocks – its fourth consecutive double-digit blocks showing – and 54 digs (13.5 per set).
Â
"I thought we were solid and it was great to see that our two outsides still had enough gas after a five-set match yesterday and traveling," said Lavrisha. "So it's a great sign to see that we're getting into shape and they can handle it mentally as well as physically."
Â
The Dons take the weekend off and return to action Tuesday for the first of a back-to-back two-match series at Portland. The road trip will extend to Feb 23 and 24 when they travel to San Diego for another two-match set. Fans can find all live coverage links at USFDons.com.
