STANFORD, Calif. — A strong outing by Landen Bourassa and another clutch hit by the offense was not enough Friday to buoy the University of San Francisco baseball team to victory, as host Stanford once again eeked out a one-run victory, scoring a run in the bottom of the eighth to win game two of the series, 3-2, at Sunken Diamond.
Bourassa went the deepest he had in a start since 2018, throwing seven-plus innings Thursday for the Dons (4-6). He struck out two and walked none – his second straight start with no walks – while allowing three runs in his second consecutive quality start (min. six inning pitched, three or less runs allowed). Bourassa held the Cardinal (5-1) scoreless in six of the seven frames that he completed, giving up an RBI hit and sacrifice fly in the third, and not allowing another run until he was chased in the eighth with a leadoff single that would eventually come around to score.
The Dons trailed, 2-0, until Jacob Westerman tied things with one swing. Westerman hit a game-tying two-run home run with one out in the seventh to even things at 2-2. The Dons' rally ended with a runner left at first, but it was the fourth time in the series the two teams had been tied. San Francisco put first two runners on with one out in the eighth after a double by Jordan Vujovich and an infield single from Luke Keaschall, but they would strand them both after an infield popup and a strikeout ended the threat.
Like Thursday's opener, Stanford took advantage of the momentum from shutting down the Dons' threat by scoring a run of their own. A leadoff single from Tommy Troy led to a go-ahead RBI double from Tim Tawa just two pitches later off the Dons' new reliever, giving Stanford a 3-2 advantage.
The series shifts to San Francisco and Benedetti Diamond for games three and four. Saturday's game three is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch. Righty Eric Reyzelman is scheduled to throw for the Dons. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
