HENDERSON, Nev. — The University of San Francisco women's golf team made the strongest charge of the day Saturday in the final round of the 2021 West Coast Conference Championship, shooting the best team score of the day en route to finishing fourth at Reflection Bay Golf Club.
The Dons shot a 302 as a team Saturday to total 905 for the tournament. They finished only one stroke out of third place and were within eight strokes of winning the whole thing. Gonzaga and Pepperdine finished in a tie at 897 for a three-round total. The Bulldogs won the WCC title on the second playoff hole. BYU – who had led the tournament for two days, shot the worst team round of the day (320) and nearly fell to fourth place, with the Dons gaining 18 strokes on them in one round.
"I am so proud of this team and how hard they worked this season," said San Francisco head coach Sara Doell. "To have finished with two solid rounds after a tough start and only be eight shots out of the lead is encouraging for what's to come for this team."
The Dons finished with three players among the WCC's top-10. Sophomore Hannah Zeman shot a three-over 75 to finish tied for fourth, only three strokes off of individual champion Caroline Hwang of Pepperdine, who totaled 221 (71-74-76) for the tournament. Joan Soewondo shot a two-over 74 Saturday to finish in eighth, only one stroke behind Zeman. Annika Borrelli posted a round of 78 to place ninth overall, one stroke behind Soewondo.
Hannah's top-five finish is a testament to her hard work, attitude and resilience," said Doell. "For both Joan and Annika to also finish in the top-10 shows the depth of our team."
Toni St. John shot three-over 75 in Saturday's final round to finish tied for 14th. Pearl Rojanapeansatith shot 83 to finish tied for 23rd.
The conclusion of the 2021 WCC Championship is the culmination of a shorter-than-usual spring season in which the Dons finished in the top-10 at all five of their tournaments. San Francisco only stands to lose two student-athletes to graduation, Borrelli and Soewondo, though they will be big shoes to fill after both ending their careers with top-10 finishes at the WCC Championship.
"With two strong freshmen coming in and five returning next fall, we look forward to returning next year to make a run at a title!" said Doell.
