SPOKANE, Wash. — The University of San Francisco baseball team's offense exploded Sunday for 11 runs, hitting two home runs and collecting 11 total hits to avoid a sweep and blow out West Coast Conference leader and nationally ranked Gonzaga, 11-1, at Patterson Baseball Complex.
Jacob Munoz turned in his second four-RBI performance of the season with his seventh home run to lead off the second and a bases-clearing, three-run double in the fifth that blew open the game at 6-0 in favor of the Dons (23-27, 16-11 WCC). Luke Keaschall notched his third consecutive multi-hit game and fourth in his last five, going 3 for 5 with a double and three runs scored.
Jack Winkler hit his 17th double of the year and 43rd of his career, breaking what was a four-way tie in the USF record book and leaving him alone in 10th place for career doubles as a Don. Darius Foster stole his 22nd base of the season while also scoring twice and doubling home a run in the sixth that made it 8-0.
San Francisco put up two runs in the second to take an early 2-0 lead, then posted back-to-back four-run frames in the fifth and sixth to go up big at 10-0. Christian Stapleton's RBI single in the eighth made it an 11-0 contest.
Meanwhile, Eric Reyzelman (3-3) posted his second consecutive strong start. He threw six shutout innings – his longest outing of the year and tied for the longest of his career – while striking out three and only giving up three hits. Owen Stevenson and Josh Mollerus backed him up with shutout innings of relief.
Gonzaga (32-15, 19-5 WCC) had eight hits in the game but only scored one run in the bottom of the ninth. Three of its eight hits came in the ninth – all singles – and the run scored on a bases-loaded walk.
San Francisco closes out its season with a three-game non-conference home-and-home series versus Santa Clara starting Friday. Fans can find all live coverage links on USFDons.com.
