LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Playing in their first road contest of the regular season, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (1-1-0) fell late to UCLA (1-1-0), 2-1, after an overtime goal from the Bruins at Wallis Anneberg Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Aiming to defend their home turf from the start, UCLA came out firing and recorded their first shot of the match at 2:40. Answering the call, freshman goalkeeper Charlie McKay denied the early attack from the Bruins to keep the game scoreless.
- Moving through the first half, the Dons would not register their first shot of the match until an attempt from junior Dominic Valdivia at the 18:57 mark.
- Despite the Bruins tallying three more shots before the end of the first half, the Dons were able to lock in and keep UCLA off the scoreboard through the initial 45 minutes as the score remained 0-0 at the halftime break.
- Applying pressure out of the gates yet again, the Bruins tallied the first point of the match on a goal from midfielder Riley Ferch at 52:35 to jump out in front, 1-0. Looking to respond, 2020-21 WCC Freshman of the Year Nonso Adimabua found an opening and blasted a shot at the goal in the 71st minute, but unfortunately missed the top right corner of the cage to even the score.
- As the game progressed into the final minutes of regulation, the Dons finally found the back of the net off of a free kick goal at the 85:38 mark. On the play, Valdivia delivered a perfect strike to senior Shayan Charalaghi in the box, who then craftily headed the ball past the UCLA goalkeeper to knot the score at 1-1 with under five minutes left on the clock. Buckling down when it mattered most, USF would force overtime after the late goal evened the contest at one.
- In the first overtime, the Bruins ultimately capitalized on a play inside the box to find the game-winning goal as defender Tommy Silva squeezed his shot just past the reach of McKay's outstretched arms to deliver the 2-1 victory for UCLA.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Notably, Charalaghi's goal on Sunday marked the first time the San Bruno, Calif. native has scored since a two-goal performance at Sacramento State on Sept. 19, 2019.
- Improving with each opportunity, McKay recorded a new career-high with four saves against the Bruins.
- For Valdivia, the Santa Monica, Calif. native has now registered at least one shot in four straight contests, which dates back to Apr. 3 of last season.
UP NEXT:
USF will return to the pitch next Friday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Santa Barbara for a matchup with UCSB. Set for 7:00 pm, live streaming and live stats for the contest will be available via the men's soccer schedule.
