Volleyball Travels to Davis For Aggie Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After battling in both matches at the Hornet Invitational last weekend, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (0-2) is looking for their first win of the new fall season when they travel to the Aggie Invitational in Davis, Calif. this weekend.
 
With two games scheduled scheduled for Friday and Saturday, the Dons are set to face the host UC Davis Aggies first before they square off with the Nevada Wolfpack to close tournament play.

LAST TIME OUT:
  • Competing in the Hornet Invitational on the campus of Sacramento State to begin their fall season, the Dons fell, 3-0, to No. 6 Florida on Friday, Aug. 27 before dropping a hard fought battle, 3-2, to the host Hornets on Saturday, Aug. 28.
  • After the first weekend of action, Shyia Richardson currently leads USF with 18 kills while Hannah Kinnison (14) and Taylor Schein (12) sit second and third respectively. Additionally, Aylen Ayub has totaled a majority of the team's assists and leads the Dons with 54 total so far this season. Defensively, Letizia Aquilino has stepped up for USF to start as the freshman leads the team with 25 digs through the first two matches.
  • Despite the loss, the Dons reached the deciding fifth set against Sacramento State for the first time in eleven matches, dating back to Feb. 19, 2021 against Portland.  
SCOUTING THE AGGIES:
  • Joining the Dons at the Hornet Invitational last weekend, the Aggies fell to Sacramento State (3-1) to open the tournament before also dropping contests to No. 6 Florida (3-0) and No. 17 UCLA (3-1).
  • Following their first minutes on the court this fall, Amara Aimufua averaged 3.18 kills per set and totaled 35 kills overall to lead the team offensively while Shira Lahay scooped 48 digs and averaged 4.36 digs per set. Notably, Josephine Ough also tallied 22 blocks, including a new career-high with 11 against the Hornets in the season opener.
  • Prior to the season, UC Davis was picked to finish fifth in the 2021 Big West Preseason Poll behind Hawai'i, Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State.  
SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK:
  • Partaking in the Idaho Classic Tournament at the University of Idaho last weekend, the Wolfpack fell to Portland, Grand Canyon and the host Vandals to begin the fall season. 
  • Although they were unable to get in the win column, Andrea Alcaraz impressed with 93 assists, five kills and three service aces during the weekend to be named to the All-Tournament Team. Additionally, Kaila Spevak tallied 33 digs and seven service aces while Reka Monteleone led Nevada with 30 kills overall.
  • Following their time in Davis, the Wolfpack will compete at the Cal Tournament next weekend, Sept. 10-11, in Berkeley before hosting their own tournament at the Virginia Street Gym in Reno from Sept. 16-18.  
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Since 2004, USF holds a 5-2 overall record against UC Davis. Although the Aggies were victorious in their last meeting on Sept. 21, 2019 (3-1), the Dons have won their last matchups on the road in Davis- Sept. 11, 2012 (3-1), Sept. 8, 2007 (3-0) and Nov. 22, 2005 (3-2).
  • Looking at the Wolfpack, the Dons sport a 3-2 overall record against Nevada since 2014, which includes a neutral site win (3-0) in Denver on Sept. 20, 2014. Despite this record, USF is aiming for revenge after falling to the Wolfpack (3-1) in their last meeting on Sept. 7, 2019.
