Lions Top USF in Matinee Matchup

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Competing in their second conference match of the season, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (0-10) fell to Loyola Marymount in straight sets, 3-0, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center on Saturday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Trading points out of the gates, USF jumped on top of LMU early in the first set, 8-7, on the strength of a 4-0 run, which included two aces from Orsula Staka.
  • In the following moments, the Lions and Dons continued to exchange blows, but LMU ultimately took charge down the stretch to take set one, 25-23.
  • Moving into set two, USF regained an advantage, 6-4, after a kill from Taylor Schein and an attack error on the Lions. Answering right back, LMU would outscore the Dons 15-4 through the middle of the match before pulling away to close set two, 25-15.
  • Starting out in a similar fashion, USF took an early 2-0 lead to start the third set following a kill from team-leader Shyia Richardson. Responding again on the attack, the Lions rallied off five consecutive points to take a 5-2 lead shortly thereafter.
  • Staying within striking distance, the Dons battled the Lions until the final whistle, but LMU was able to buckle down when it mattered most to secure the third set, 25-17, and the match win, 3-0. Notably, Saturday's victory marked the eleventh consecutive win for the Lions.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Showing signs of promise yet again, Richardson tallied a team-high seven kills to push her season total to 89, which also is first on the Dons.
  • Defensively, Letizia Aquilino paced USF with nine digs while Richardson finished second with five herself.
  • Notably, Aylen Ayub tallied three service aces against the Lions on Saturday, good for her second-most in a match this season (season-high is four).
UP NEXT:
USF will make the short trip to Stockton next Tuesday, Sept. 28 for their first conference road match when they travel to Pacific. Game time is set for 7:00 pm. Live streaming and live statistics links will be available via the team's schedule page.
