USF Falls to UC Davis in Straight Sets

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Playing in their second straight tournament to begin their fall schedule, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (0-3), fell to UC Davis in straight sets, 3-0, on Friday evening.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Aiming to get back on track after dropping their first two contests to start the year, the Dons were unable to find their rhythm out of the gates against the Aggies. In the first set, UC Davis used a strong hitting performance as a team to lift them to an early advantage as the Aggies tallied 16 kills in the 25-14 set win. Notably, three different Dons recorded at least two kills in the first set: Aylen Ayub, Shyia Richardson and Orsula Staka.
  • Moving into the second set, USF could not rally to even the match at one as UC Davis recorded their second straight set win in dominant fashion over the Dons, 25-13. As a whole, eight different players had notched at least one kill for the Dons through the second set, while Letizia Aquilino had tallied a team-high eight digs.
  • Battling back, USF would push their opponent to the wire in the third set, including having a lead as late as 24-23, but ultimately fell to UC Davis after the Aggies reeled off three consecutive points to secure the set and overall victory, 26-24.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Individually, Bruna Correa registered a new season-high with six assists on Friday evening. Overall, these six mark her most in a contest since she logged 13 assists at San Diego on Feb. 25 of last spring. Notably, she also recorded her first service ace of the year against UC Davis.
  • Expanding her role as an upperclassman, Sophie Sydenham led the Dons with seven total kills, which also tied her most in a single match since Feb. 25 at San Diego.
  • For Aquilino, the Italian reached double-digits in digs for the second straight contest by pacing USF with a team-high 16 digs against the Aggies.
UP NEXT:
USF will play their second and final game of the Aggie Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 4 at 12:00 pm as they set to battle the Nevada Wolfpack. Although UC Davis is not playing in the match, live stats will be available via the team's schedule page.
