SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Fresh off of a 15-point victory over San Diego in their conference opener, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (15-2, 2-0) remained perfect at home on Saturday evening as the Dons handled Loyola Marymount (7-6, 0-1), 97-73, to move to 11-0 at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center this season.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Matching each other stride-for-stride out of the gates, USF jumped on top of LMU, 13-10, after two pairs of free throws from guard Jamaree Bouyea less than six minutes into the contest.
- As the first half played on, the Lions continued to battle the Dons with each basket, coming as close as one point, 25-24, at the 6:31 mark. However, USF would ultimately find their groove on both sides of the ball in response as the Dons used the strength of a 22-2 run in the final six minutes of the first half to establish a dominant 23-point advantage at the break, 52-29.
- Keeping their foot on the gas out of the locker room, consecutive field goals from guard Gabe Stefanini and forward Yauhen Massalski kept USF in front by twenty-six, 63-37, at the 15:36 mark in the second half.
- Just a few ticks after the ten-minute mark, Zane Meeks continued the offensive barrage for the Dons as the 6'9" forward knocked down a three-pointer at 9:41 to increase the San Francisco lead to 77-49.
- Holding strong down the stretch of regulation, LMU would not go down without a fight, but USF once again defended their home floor as the Dons did not let the Lions come within more than 20 points in the second half. Closing out the scoring with baskets from Ndewedo Newbury and Justin Bieker, USF cruised to a 24-point victory, 97-73, to move to 2-0 in WCC play and 11-0 on the Hilltop this season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Enjoying an all-around team effort, five different Dons finished in double figures in the win over LMU: Bouyea (22 points), Khalil Shabazz (17 points), Meeks (14 points), Massalski (13 points) and Julian Rishwain (13 points).
- For Bouyea, Thursday's performance marked the eighth time this season in which he has poured in 20+ points as the Seaside native was named the Player of the Game after adding five assists, three steals and two rebounds in 31 minutes played.
- Impressively, USF shot 41.2 percent from beyond-the-arc (14-34) while also forcing 21 turnovers by the Lions. As a team, the Dons led LMU in points off turnovers (31-10), second chance points (16-6), fast break points (19-15) and bench points (36-23).
