LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Returning to the road riding a four-game winning streak, the USF Dons women's volleyball team (12-10, 5-6) showed great resilience in their road rematch against the Loyola Marymount Lions (13-6, 8-2) on Thursday evening taking home the 3-1 victory in Southern California. Down 1-0 following the first set, USF rattled off three consecutive set victories to end the Lions' eight game winning streak and to push the Dons' streak to five straight victories in WCC play.
Claire Crijns had a banner performance for the Dons as she led the way with 13 kills and five blocks to help USF continue their conference winning streak. The duo of
Anna Petrova and
Maria Petkova each pieced together strong performances for USF as the pair each recorded 11 kills while Petkova also contributed five blocks and two service aces to go along with Petrova's two blocks and a service ace.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The Dons came out hot in the first set of play on Wednesday night as they took an early 8-5 lead on the road thanks to key kills from Claire Crijns and Orsula Staka. The hometown Lions were able to battle back at the midway point with a late USF rally evening the score at 21-all before LMU took control of the set to come away with the 25-21 victory.
- Looking to get back into the match, the Dons were able to build some early momentum in the set as they took a 7-4 lead at they capitalized on a pair of errors from the Lions and a service ace from Petkova. USF didn't relent throughout the set as they extended their lead to 19-11 keyed by a pair of Letizia Aquilino serves being turned into service errors. An Aylen Ayub serve at the end of the set led to an LMU attack error as the Dons evened the match at one apiece by taking the set by a 25-18 score.
- USF was able to carry that momentum from the second set into the third as they quickly took a 7-4 lead courtesy of a Crijns kill and a few service errors from LMU. After the Lions clawed their way back in control of the match with a 24-21 lead, the Dons showed their fight and resiliency by fighting back to even the score at 25 and to continually extend the set before taking the lead for good. USF took control of the set and match on kills from Crijns and Petrova with the set sealing block from Crijns and Lauren Perri gave USF the 28-26 win.
- The Dons didn't relent in the fourth and final set as they raced out to a 12-9 lead thanks to a pair of blocks from Perri. USF went on to take total control of the match as they pieced together a 13-5 run to take the four set victory as a Petkova block sealed the 25-14 Dons' victory as the team improved to 8-6 away from War Memorial at the Sobrato Center this season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Crijns was key once again in the USF front court as she was able to record 13 kills, 10 digs, five blocks and 15.5 points on 28 total attacks playing all four sets to record the double-double for USF on Thursday night.
- Providing an instant spark off the bench, Petrova contributed 11 key kills, as well as three digs and service aces to help the Dons knock off the Lions.
- Petkova continued her strong first season on the Hilltop with a stat line of 11 kills, five blocks and two services aces for USF.
- Playing all four sets and starting up front for the Dons, Perri posted seven kills and four blocks in her team's road victory.
