SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- On a beautiful afternoon on the Hilltop at Benedetti Diamond the USF Dons baseball team (1-1) picked up their first victory of the 2022 season and evened their series with the No. 17 UCSB Gauchos (1-1) in a 6-3 victory on Saturday.
Left-hander
Weston Lombard threw 4 1/3 no-hit innings as he struck out three and allowed just one earned run in the victory. While 1B/OF
Gabe Giosso collected his first Dons' hit in style with an opposite field two run blast to give USF the early lead. Following a three-run fifth inning from the Gauchos, outfielder
Jordan Vujovich hit a deep blast to straight away center to give USF a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Both starting pitchers were on their game early as the Dons got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on Giosso's home run to right.
- The Gauchos pesky offense put up a three-spot in the top of the fifth, but thanks to Vujovich's moon blast to center the Dons retook a 4-3 lead in the bottom half of the inning.
- USF added a pair of tack on runs late in the ballgame thanks to Gaucho defensive miscues to take the 6-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
- Jesse Barron, Josh Mollerus and Riley Ornido each combined to cover the final 4 2/3 innings in relief as USF got the 6-3 victory in front of the home fans.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Giosso didn't waste his first start as a Don with his impressive opposite field shot in his 1-for-3 day at the plate as he scored two runs, worked a walk and collected his first two RBI playing for USF.
- Lombard impressed in his first start as a Don working into the fifth inning and not allowing a hit to a ranked opponent.
- Vujovich tagged a memorable home run to dead center to put his team back out in front over the Gauchos. The USF lead off hitter also showed his tremendous ability to get on base by drawing his second walk in as many games.
- Riley Ornido ended the day with a bright spot as the right-hander made his return from elbow surgery and collected the save in the Dons' victory at Benedetti Diamond.
