Dons Drop Series Finale to No. 17 Gauchos

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Wrapping up their first series of the 2022 season, the USF Dons baseball team (1-2) didn't have much go their way as they fell to the No. 17 UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (2-1) 11-1 on Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

Right-hander Sam Beck had a solid USF debut on the mound as he tossed 4 1/3 innings allowing two earned runs and striking out a pair of Gaucho hitters. Gabe Giosso was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate this afternoon with an RBI as he drove in infielder Brandon Greim after his double for USF's lone run on Sunday.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • UCSB got on the board in the top of the first inning on a delayed steal attempt that resulted in the Gauchos scoring on the throw to second base, while USF responded to even the score in the bottom of the second on Giosso's RBI single to right field scoring Greim.
  • The Gauchos retook the lead for good in hte top of the fifth on back-to-back solo home runs which were the first allowed by Dons' pitching this season.
  • UCSB further extended their lead with a eight-run top of the sixth to put the game away for good.
  • The final three innings of play concluded without any runs scored by either side as the Gauchos left the Hilltop with the 11-1 victory on Sunday.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Giosso continued his fine start to his USF career by picking up two more hits on Sunday and now leads the team through three games with 3 RBI's.
  • Greim went 1-for-3 and scored the Dons' only run of the game in the series finale.
  • Hitting at the top of the Dons' order Darius Foster and Luke Keaschall each collected two hits against UCSB pitching as they were causing havoc for the opposing pitching staff.
  • Beck had many good moments in his first time toeing the rubber on the Hilltop as he was able to work around traffic on the bases and hold the Gauchos to three total runs with only two of them being earned.
  • Reliever Kaleb Woltz threw a clean 1,2,3 inning making his season debut in the seventh inning.
