SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Following a full day of baseball after Saturday's doubleheader, the USF Dons baseball team (5-3) were back in action as they faced the Utah Valley Wolverines (2-6) for the finale of the four-game weekend series. After an initial slow start to the ballgame for USF, the offense woke up midway through and the bullpen combined to throw 5 1/3 scoreless innings to take the 6-3 win at Benedetti Diamond.
Josh Mollerus picked up his first win of the season throwing four scoreless innings and stranded two runners in scoring position to maintain a three-all tie in the top of the fourth inning.
Luke Keaschall provided a great spark at the top of the order going 2-for-4 at the plate including launching his second home run of the season to give USF a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- USF got off to a quick start in the bottom of the first, as Gabe Giosso ended up circling the bases following an error by a Wolverine outfielder leading to the first two runs for the Dons.
- Utah Valley answered with one in the second and two in the third inning after Kyle Knell drove a base hit up the middle for a 3-3 tie at the end of three innings of play.
- Keaschall was all over a hanging breaking ball that he drove over the wall in left to give USF the 4-3 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning.
- The Dons tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh as Brandon Greim and Keaschall each recorded an RBI on fielder's choices to give USF the 6-3 lead.
- Lefty Lance Santerre came in and got the final out in the eighth inning and then slammed the door in the ninth inning to record his first save and give the Dons the 6-3 win at home.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Keaschall has picked up right where he left off last season with a phenomenal .457 OBP and .579 slugging percentage early in the season for an OPS north of a 1.000 to lead the Dons early on. Luke also stole his sixth base of the season in seven attempts to lead the way for USF and the WCC early in the season.
- Mollerus stepped up in a huge way to pick up the team with his four scoreless inning as he allowed just two hits, no walks and struck out five Wolverine hitters.
- Starter Sam Beck gutted through 3 2/3 innings pitched allowing just one earned run and recording one strikeout as he worked around traffic on the bases most of his outing.
- Knell had a productive day at the plate getting the start against a left-handed pitcher going 2-for-3 at the dish with an RBI and a run scored hitting in the eighth spot in the batting order.
