SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Returning for the first time in more than a week and a half, the USF Dons baseball team (14-15, 3-4) dropped the first game of their weekend series with the San Diego Toreros (17-7, 6-1) by a 8-3 final score at Benedetti Diamond.
The USF bullpen was phenomenal throughout Friday's game as pitcher
Julian Washburn and
Will Hearn combined to throw five scoreless innings and struck out six Torero hitters to keep the Dons in the game. Sophomore infielder
Luke Keaschall led the way for USF's offense hitting at the top of the order and mashing his third home run of the season over the wall in left center.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Both teams got their offenses started early in the contest as the Toreros scored a run in the top of the first and the Dons brought in the tying run on an RBI groundout from Mario DeMera that scored Keaschall.
- San Diego added five more runs in the top of the second, while the Dons were able to get on of those runs back as Michael Campagna drove a double to the left center field gap that scored Kyle Knell making it a 6-2 Torero lead after two.
- The Toreros tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 8-2 through the middle innings of play.
- Keaschall answered back in a big way with solo home run over the left center wall to cut the Dons' deficit to 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
- The rest of the game remained scoreless the rest of the way as the Toreros went on to win 8-3 on Friday afternoon.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Keaschall hat a nice day at the plate in the leadoff spot going 1-for-3 with his solo home run and two runs scored as he also scored the first USF run of the game.
- Harris Williams III also provided a nice contribution as he went 2-for-4 hitting in the five spot and playing both left and right field during Friday's game.
- Campagna did a good job at the plate and behind it as he went 1-for-4 with his RBI double to the left center gap.
- Washburn did a tremendous job saving the bullpen in relief as he worked three scoreless innings and struck out three Torero hitters.
- Hearn also pitched two scoreless frames to finish things off as he accumlated three strikeouts as well.

The Dons now look ahead to the second game of the series against San Diego on Saturday afternoon, USF will send right-handed pitcher
