Dons Come From Behind to Defeat USD

Box Score SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Despite falling behind early, the USF Dons baseball team (15-15, 4-4) battled hard throughout and came through with an impressive 6-5 come from behind victory over the San Diego Toreros (17-8, 6-2) on Saturday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

The Dons' offense brought the fire power as the team hit three home runs courtesy of Nick Yovetich, Luke Keaschall and Darius Foster that went a long way to deciding the game in USF's favor. Coming from behind thanks to a great effort from the bullpen and offense helped the Dons even the series with the WCC-leading Toreros heading into the rubber match on Sunday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Diego got on the board early on in Saturday's contest as they scored a run in the top of the first take the early 1-0 lead.
  • The Toreros tacked on four more runs in the top of the third inning, but the Dons responded with a deep home run from Yovetich over the wall in right field to make it a 5-1 USD lead after three.
  • USF got back into the game a few innings later as Keaschall drove a missile line drive over the wall in left center field for a two-run home run that scored Christian Stapleton to make it a 5-3 game through five innings of play.
  • The Dons were able to even the score in the bottom of the seventh as Brandon Greim came off the bench to deliver a pinch-hit RBI single to score Keaschall, and then came around to score the tying run on Mario DeMera's RBI single to left that evened the game at five all.
  • Inserted into the game midway through, Foster came through in a massive way by hitting his first home run of the season over the wall in right in the eighth inning that gave USF the 6-5 lead that helped spark their comeback from down five runs.
  • Josh Mollerus entered the game looking to slam the door in the ninth and struck out the final Torero hitter he saw leading to the 6-5 victory on Saturday afternoon.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Keaschall was once again tremendous hitting at the top of the USF batting order as he went 2-for-3 with his two-run homer, scored a pair of runs, stole a base and drove in two against USD.
  • DeMera provided a great spark in the three-hole on Saturday as he went 2-for-4 and delivered a crucial two-out RBI single that scored Greim and evened the game in the seventh inning.
  • Yovetich hit a massive home run over the wall in right field that now puts him tied for the team lead with five round trippers this year.
  • Foster only received one at-bat in the second game of the series, but he was able to make the most of it by hitting his first home run of the year that put the Dons up for good.
  • Out of the bullpen, Oscar Lepe, Lance Santerre and Josh Mollerus combined to throw four scoreless frames with each allowing just one hit and combining to strike out three USD hitters.
