MALIBU, Calif. – Backed by a complete game from
Jesse Barron, the University of San Francisco baseball team (19-20, 8-7 WCC) took care of business on Saturday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium as the Dons defeated Pepperdine (18-16, 7-8 WCC), 6-3, to secure the series win over the Waves.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Similar to the first two games of the weekend, both offenses could not get much going early as the Dons did not strike first until the top of the fourth inning. In their turn at the plate, USF pushed across two runs on two hits, which was highlighted by a two-run single from Brandon Greim.
- With Barron finding his groove on the mound, the middle innings did not see tons of action on either side. In the home half of the seventh, the Waves got on the board with an RBI single from Grant Schoen to trim their deficit to 2-1.
- Shortly thereafter, USF responded by adding three runs on one hit and one error in the top of the eighth to extend their advantage to 5-1. In the inning, Mario DeMera and Jordan Vujovich came around to score on an error by the Pepperdine shortstop while Luke Keaschall drilled an infield single to third base to drive home Kyle Knell.
- Answering right back, the Waves cut their gap in half in the bottom of the eighth, 5-3, on a two-run home run from Charles Masino. Adding some late insurance in the top of the ninth, Greim came through in the clutch once again as the senior delivered an RBI single into right center field to give the Dons a three-run advantage.
- Going the distance for the first time in his collegiate career, Barron buckled down when it mattered most to close out the contest, 6-3, and notch USF's third WCC series win of the season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Leading the way for the green and gold, Barron finished with a final line of 9.0 innings pitched, three earned runs, nine strikeouts and just one walk on an efficient 96 pitches.
- At the dish, Greim tied his career-high with three RBI as the Dublin native went 3-for-4 in Saturday's victory.
- Enjoying success offensively for the second straight day, seven of the nine USF starters tallied at least one hit in the contest. With 10 total hits on the afternoon, the Dons have now recorded 10+ hits in five of their last six games.
- On the base paths, Keaschall swiped his league-leading twenty-fifth stolen base of the year while Harris Williams III nabbed his twelfth of the season to move into a tie for fourth in the conference.
