Dons Drop Doubleheader against Lions

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – After game one of their weekend series was postponed due to a power outage in the neighborhood near Loyola Marymount, the University of San Francisco baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at LMU on Saturday as the Dons fell to the Lions 4-3 in game one and 9-3 in game two.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

Game One-
  • Defending their home field to begin the weekend, LMU scored one run in the bottom of the second, third and fourth inning to hold a 3-0 advantage through the first four complete.
  • After starter Owen Stevenson settled in by putting up a zero in the home half of the fifth, USF responded with two solo homeruns in the top of the sixth as Luke Keaschall and Gabe Giosso each launched their seventh long balls of the season. One inning later, Michael Campagna blasted his first big fly of the year to even the contest at three through seven innings.
  • Looking to keep their momentum going, the Dons got one runner on in the eighth and two runners on in the ninth, but were unable to push across the go-ahead run.
  • Coming through in their turn at the plate, LMU drove home the game-winning run on an RBI single from catcher Robbie Ayers to secure a 4-3 walkoff victory in the series opener.
Game Two-
  • Striking first again, the Lions gained control early, 2-0, in the first inning on an RBI double and sacrifice fly.
  • Answering back in the top of the second, Brandon Greim laced an RBI single into right field to trim USF's deficit in half, 2-1. In the home half of the second, LMU stretched their lead to 4-1 with two more runs on three hits. Keeping pace in the top of the third, USF came within one run, 4-3, after an RBI single from Harris Williams III and a sacrifice fly courtesy of Giosso.
  • Matching the Dons in the innings to follow, this is as close as USF would get as the LMU broke open the contest with one run in the third and fourth innings followed by three runs in the fifth to hold a 9-3 advantage through five complete.
  • With neither team able to do much offensively in the later innings, LMU held on to grab game two of the doubleheader, 9-3, aa the Lions downed the Dons at Page Stadium.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Notching a hit in both contests, Mario DeMera continued to his strong play in conference action with a 3-for-8 performance at the dish on Saturday. Notably, Williams III and Greim also each tallied at least one hit in both games.
  • Starting game two behind the dish, Lane Oliphant logged his second multi-hit game of the season as the sophomore finished 2-for-4 with one run scored for USF.
  • Out of the bullpen, Adam Shew, Julian Washburn and Kaleb Woltz combined for 5.1 innings of scoreless relief across the two contests as the trio struck out five total batters while issuing just one walk.
UP NEXT:
USF will wrap up their road stretch in Southern California with the series finale against LMU tomorrow, Sunday, Apr. 24. First pitch from Page Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 pm as live streaming and live statistics are available via the team's schedule page.
