LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Salvaging the series with a thrilling comeback win, the University of San Francisco baseball team (21-22, 9-9 WCC) plated five runs in the ninth inning to steal the series finale over Loyola Marymount (15-24-1, 11-7 WCC), 13-12, at Page Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Grabbing an early 2-0 lead, LMU got on the board first with two runs on two hits and one USF error in the bottom of the first inning.
- Trimming the gap shortly thereafter, Nick Yovetich lined a single through the right side of the infield to drive home Zach Freeman and cut USF's deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second. Quickly answering, the Lions responded with four runs in the home half of the second to hold a 6-1 advantage moving into the third.
- Clawing back, the Dons did not lose faith as they climbed back by scoring four runs of their own in the top of the fourth. In the inning, Yovetich laced another single, this time plating two runs, before Luke Keaschall doubled down the left field line to bring USF within one, 6-5.
- After LMU countered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Dons continued to keep pace by pushing across two more in the top of the fifth. Coming through in the clutch again, Yovetich ripped another two-run single through the right side to score Kyle Knell and Mario DeMera. After five, the Lions remained on top, 8-7.
- Moving into the middle innings, LMU extended their lead to 10-7 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but USF continued to fight as an RBI groundout from Gabe Giosso brought the Dons within two, 10-8.
- Digging deep for some late magic, the Lions scored once more in the home half of the eighth, but it was the top of the ninth that catapulted USF to victory. In the inning, the Dons erupted for five runs on seven hits and one error, which was highlighted by Yovetich's fourth RBI single of the afternoon as well as RBI hits from Harris Williams III, Giosso and DeMera.
- Despite one run coming across for LMU in their turn at the dish in the ninth, Jonah Jenkins got the final batter to fly out to center field and strand the tying run as the Dons held on to secure the comeback victory over the Lions, 13-12.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Leading the offense with a career-day at the plate, Yovetich went 4-for-5 (ties career-high in hits) with six RBI (new career-high) and two runs scored (ties season-high) as the redshirt senior recorded just the third four-hit game of the season for USF.
- Alongside Yovetich, Knell also recorded a new career-high with four hits in the contest as the Tigard, Ore. native finished 4-for-5 while also tying his career-high with three runs scored.
- Serving as a catalyst at the top of the order, Keaschall tallied his third three-hit performance of the year after finishing 3-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
