Dons Tally Third Straight Win as Bats Explode in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. – Recording their third straight victory with a win on Tuesday night, the University of San Francisco baseball team (20-20, 8-7 WCC) hung on to take down Cal (18-18, 9-9 Pac-12), 14-11, as the Dons tied their season high with fourteen runs to top the Golden Bears on the road in Berkeley.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Wasting little time, sophomore Luke Keaschall got USF on the board first with a solo home run to left field on just the third pitch of the evening, giving the Dons the early 1-0 advantage.
  • After responding with a run in the bottom of the first to knot the contest at one, USF regained control, 7-1, by putting up a six spot in the top of the third, which was highlighted by a three-run home run from Brandon Greim.
  • Exchanging blows as the night went on, Cal would answer with two runs in the home half of the third, followed by each team adding to their total in the fifth. Through five innings complete, the Dons held the lead, 8-5.
  • Moving into the later innings, the Golden Bears would keep pace with USF as they trimmed their deficit to 8-6 after a bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Shortly thereafter, Jordan Vujovich laced a two-run single into right field in the top of the eighth to widen the gap to four for the green and gold, 10-6. Responding with a rally of their own, Cal plated three runs on three hits in their turn at the dish in the eighth to make it a one-run game, 10-9, heading into the final frame.
  • Tallying some late insurance, the Dons went on to add four runs in the top of the ninth on two hits and one error to hold a 14-9 advantage. Despite the Golden Bears pushing for a late rally with two runs in the bottom of the inning, freshman Adam Shew came on in relief to secure the win as the right-hander closed the door on Cal, 14-11, to pick up USF's third victory in a row and first win over a Pac-12 opponent this season.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Producing most of their damage at the top of the order, the first six batters in USF's lineup on Tuesday recorded at least one RBI, with Greim leading the way with three runs driven in. Overall, Greim's three-RBI performance marked the third time this season he has logged three RBI or more, good for the team lead.
  • After going yard in the victory, Keaschall and Giosso now share the team lead with six home runs on the year. Notably, Giosso scored a season-high three runs on Tuesday night while pushing his hitting streak to six consecutive games. For Keaschall, the Watsonville native has now reached base in eight straight contests, including notching a hit in five consecutive games.
  • On the base paths, the Dons tallied four stolen bases on the night as Harris Williams III swiped two more bags to move into a tie with Darius Foster for third in the WCC with 14 total steals.
  • As a team, USF scored 14 runs for the second time this month as the Dons tied their season high despite being outhit by the Golden Bears, 15-9.
UP NEXT:
USF will head to Southern California for the second weekend in a row as the Dons will travel to Loyola Marymount this weekend for a three-game series against the Lions. Live streaming and live statistics for all three games of the series will be available via the team's schedule page.
