Dons Double Up Tigers on Senior Day

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Wrapping up the regular season with their fourth straight win, the University of San Francisco baseball team (28-28, 14-13 WCC) completed the three-game sweep of Pacific (14-38, 5-22 WCC) on Sunday afternoon as the Dons defeated the Tigers, 12-6, at Benedetti Diamond.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Punching out the side to begin the ballgame, starter Julian Washburn set the tone early for the Dons as the right-hander retired Pacific in order in the top of the first.
  • After the Tigers got on the board first with two runs on two hits and one error in the top of the second, USF responded with four runs on five hits of their own in the home half of the inning, two of which came on a two-run double from Nick Yovetich.
  • Matching each other stride for stride, both teams would go on to score two runs in the third inning. In the Dons' turn at the dish, catcher Lane Oliphant lined a two-run single up the middle to put USF on top as the green and gold held a 6-4 lead through the first three innings.
  • Following another scoreless inning in the fourth, the Dons added to their advantage in the fifth as Jordan Vujovich came home from third on a wild pitch to extend the gap to 7-4.
  • Similar to the third, the Tigers and Dons went on to push across two runs again in the sixth. In the bottom of the inning, Gabe Giosso launched his team-leading eighth home run of the season to begin the action before Kyle Knell drove an RBI double off the right center field wall to push USF's lead to 9-6.
  • Adding to their lead in the late innings, the Dons offense continued to roll as USF scored three in the home half of the eighth, two of which came on the strength of a two-run double from Vujovich. Two batters later, Yovetich drove home the final run of the afternoon a sacrifice fly to center field.
  • Securing his fifth save of the season out of the bullpen, Josh Mollerus came on to lock down the victory as the Dons doubled up the Tigers, 12-6, to notch their third series sweep of the year and first of conference play.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Leading the charge offensively, Vujovich capped off his regular season with his first four-hit performance of the season. Overall, the outfielder finished 4-for-5 with two RBI and four runs scored against the Tigers.
  • Notably, four different Dons tallied at least two hits on Sunday: Vujovich (4), Giosso (2), Knell (2) and Yovetich (2). Heating up at the right time, Yovetich notched his second multi-RBI contest of the weekend as he drove in three runs in the finale (seven total in the series).
  • With his two-run single in the third, Oliphant recorded his first hit since Apr. 23 at LMU.
  • On the mound, Oscar Lepe picked up his first win of his Division I career as the left-hander tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball while striking out two for the Dons.
POSTGAME: UP NEXT:
USF will return to the West Coast Conference tournament for the first time in four years as the Dons have officially clinched the sixth seed in the 2022 WCC Tournament. Set to play the three seed, USF will square off against San Diego at 3:00 pm at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.
