Dons Treck North to Begin the 2022 Season

HILLSBORO/EUGENE, Ore. -- As the long offseason has come and gone, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team is set to kick off their 2022 season on the road as they head to Portland State for a Thursday evening match on Aug. 18 at 6:05 p.m. The Dons will then continue their Pacific Northwest trip by taking on the Oregon Ducks on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2:00 p.m.

USF is facing two teams it saw during last season's non-conference slate as the Dons were able to knock off the Vikings 3-0, while they tied with the Ducks 2-2 in their season opener at Negoesco Stadium. Dons sophomore defender Kenna Roth excelled in the meeting against Oregon last year on the Hilltop as she notched both USF goals in the season-opening draw.

"I think everyone is excited for the start of a new season," USF head coach Jim Millinder said. "I believe the team is ready but we need to be focused on our roles and pay attention to all of the details. Details win and lose you games. Portland State and Oregon will be a very tough road trip, it's very difficult to win on the road but we must. I think we have had a very good preseason to this point. Now is the time to go apply all that training and get results!"

Leading the way for the returning Dons this season is sophomore forward Marissa Vasquez, who was picked to the All-WCC preseason team following her stellar 2021 season where she led USF in points (11), goals (4) and was tied for the team lead with three assists. Senior defender Samantha Curwood-Wagner and sophomore midfielder Elle Soleau each return to help steady the offensive attack, while goalkeepers junior Megan Nail and sophomores Makena Honda Kira Ybarra also all return to the for the Dons in goal.

New faces on the Hilltop include a nine-person freshman class: defender Ella Hwang, forwards Lindsey Chau, Hannah Burns, Ellie Weissenberg, Marie Ward, Nina Konidaris and midfielders Cade Mendoza, Lily Loughney and Alex Carpio.
