DAVIS, Calif. -- Back in action for the third time this season away from the Hilltop, the USF Dons women's soccer team (2-1-1) got off to a fast start and carried the momentum throughout their 2-0 victory over the UC Davis Aggies (2-2) at Aggie Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
USF's offense got off to a quick start and thanks in part to a tremendous performance from junior goalkeeper
Megan Nail were able to make the early lead stand up in route to their second true road victory of non-conference play.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- It took just 10 minutes for USF's offense to get on the board as a tremendous maneuver from freshman forward Lindsey Chau got the Aggie goalkeeper off her feet to set up a great look that allowed the Dons to take the early 1-0 lead.
- USF wasn't done yet as they were able to get a key goal late in the first half to extend their lead courtesy of sophomore defender Ana Gorlach who was able to sneak it to the back of the net off a great assist from freshman midfielder Alex Carpio.
- Both defenses turned it on in the second half as neither side was able to get on the board as USF used a tremendous backline and strong play in goal to record their second shutout in the first four games of the season and to come away with the 2-0 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Nail was key in anchoring the Dons' defense by keeping the Aggies off the scoreboard all afternoon as she was able to record nine total saves as she earned her second clean sheet of the season.
- Chau has continued her torrid start to her collegiate career with her second goal of the season to get USF off to a fast start on a warm, sunny afternoon in Davis.
- Gorlach's first career collegiate goal came at a great time late in the first half to help the Dons extend their lead as she's played a key role coming off the Dons' bench so far in the 2022 season.
- Carpio has played early dividends in the USF offense with her aggressiveness as she set up Gorlach perfectly for the goal to record her first assist and point of her college career.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"It was a hard fought game tonight, we capitalized on pressing them up high and
Lindsey Chau took advantage of the chance.
Ana Gorlach got on the end of a corner by
Alex Carpio. I thought it was a solid performance all the way around tonight with lots of contributions by many players!
Megan Nail was outstanding tonight in goal controlling her box. We now look forward to our next match against Cal."
UP NEXT:
The Dons now return back to the friendly comforts of the Hilltop for another matchup with a Pac-12 foe as they welcome the California Golden Bears (2-1) to Negoesco Stadium Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. USF last faced the Golden Bears a season ago when they lost 1-0 in Berkeley.
