Dons Knock Off No. 13 Santa Clara to Complete Season Sweep

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Securing another statement win, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (5-6-3, 2-1-1 WCC) upset No. 13 Santa Clara (10-3-2, 3-1-1 WCC) for the second time this season as the Dons shutout the Broncos, 1-0, at Stevens Stadium on Wednesday night.

Overall, the win marks the first time San Francisco has defeated Santa Clara twice in one season as the Dons kept SCU scoreless across 180 minutes this year. Notably, the victory also marks the first time the green and gold have won in Santa Clara since 2015 and the first time Santa Clara has dropped a conference match at home since Oct. 2017.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Following two shots by the Broncos to open play, Marissa Vasquez found the back of the net on the first attempt of the night by the Dons as Ellie Weissenberg assisted the midfielder on her team-leading fifth goal of the season at 8:42 to give San Francisco an early 1-0 lead.
  • Although SCU would go on to outshoot the green and gold in the first half, Vasquez continued to fire for USF as she racked up two more shots as the action moved along. At the halftime break, San Francisco maintained their one-goal lead over the host Broncos.
  • As the second half began, Santa Clara kept applying pressure offensively, but could not piece together the sequence they need to even the score as the USF defense continued to keep one of the nation's most dangerous teams off the scoreboard.
  • Delivering when it mattered most, goalkeeper Kira Ybarra went on to record five of her eight saves in the second half as she put together arguably her best performance of the season on Wednesday night.
  • Hanging on for their second upset win of the season, the Dons got it done in crunch time to secure their second shutout of the year over Santa Clara by taking home the 1-0 victory the 13th-ranked Broncos.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Spearheading a team effort, Ybarra tied her season-high with eight saves on the night en route to her fifth clean sheet of the year.
  • For Vasquez, the senior extends her team lead in goals while climbing into a tie for ninth in the conference with her strike on Wednesday night.
  • Adding to the record books, the win also marks the second victory all-time in Santa Clara for the Dons as USF had only previously defeated SCU on the road following a 1-0 victory on Oct. 4, 2015.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH MILLINDER:
"It was a great team effort tonight. Kira was outstanding...The best game of her career to date. There were so many contributors tonight. I'm so proud of the team and their effort and resilience. We will enjoy the result tonight, but then we have to get focused and ready for San Diego on Saturday night."

UP NEXT:
San Francisco will return home to the Hilltop this weekend as the Dons will suit up for another WCC matchup when they host San Diego this Saturday, Oct. 21 at 6:00 pm at Negoesco Stadium. Live streaming, live statistics and ticket links are available via the team's schedule page.
