SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Beginning their weekend series in the South Bay, the University of San Francisco baseball team (16-24, 7-15 WCC) dropped a hard-fought contest to Santa Clara (25-15, 11-8 WCC) in game one at Stephen Schott Stadium on Friday night.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- With only one hit on both sides through the first two innings on, USF got the scoring started with a solo home run off the bat off Ryan Martinez, his second of the season, in the top of the third as the Dons jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.
- Starting strong on the mound, Jesse Barron did not allow a hit in the fourth, but the Broncos answered back with a solo shot of their own from Eamonn Lance in the fifth to tie things up at 1-1.
- One inning later, SCU took the lead with a two-run double coming from first baseman Efrain Manzo, which put the Broncos in front, 3-1 after six innings complete.
- Responding shortly thereafter, Patrick Keighran and Martinez reached base to begin the seventh inning before Blake Atkins evened things up by delivering a two-run single to knot things at 3 all heading into the seventh inning stretch.
- Despite this response, Santa Clara punched back in the home half of the inning after capitalizing on a defensive error by Martinez to take a 4-3 advantage after the seventh.
- Looking for some late inning heroics, USF could not get their bats going late as the Broncos ultimately hung on in the eighth and ninth to defend their home field and take the opener of the series by a final of 4-3.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- On the mound, Barron went at least 6.0 innings for the seventh time in eleven starts this season, including the fourth time in his last five starts. Overall, the right-hander finished with a final line of 6.1 innings pitched, 6 hits, 4 runs, 3 earned runs and 2 strikeouts on 102 pitches.
- Additionally, Ryan Yerby came on out of the bullpen to log his fourth outing with no runs allowed as the graduate student tossed 1.2 innings of relief while only allowing two hits and one walk alongside two strikeouts.
- Serving as a catalyst at the top of the lineup, Harris Williams III notched his team-leading 19th multi-hit game on Friday night as the Denver native finished 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot for USF.
