SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Leaving it all on the field until the final whistle, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team (0-1) dropped a hard-fought match to Oregon State (1-0) on Thursday night as the Beavers topped the Dons, 1-0, at Negoesco Stadium.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Starting strong offensively out of the gates, San Francisco fired their first two shots of the match in the first three minutes as Kaya Pigoni missed wide of the cage at 1:27 before Gabby Rizzo tallied her first shot on goal at the 2:45 mark.
- After more shots from Rizzo, Kenna Roth and Jackie Koerwitz, Oregon State got on the board in the 28th minute as Regan Berg found the cutting Lindsey Antonson in the box as Antonson punched home her first goal of the year to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
- Continuing to attack, the Dons kept applying pressure as Marissa Vasquez and Cade Mendoza each recorded their first shots of the season in the minutes to follow.
- Unfortunately, USF could not find the equalizer through the first 45 minutes of play as OSU held on to their 1-0 advantage at the halftime break.
- Coming out of the locker room, USF kept at it on the offensive end as Lindsey Chau joined the attack with a shot of her own just 28 seconds into the second half.
- Outshooting the Beavers 13-3 in the second half, the green and gold had multiple opportunities but could not quite find the back of the net to even things up.
- With just over two minutes left in regulation, Oregon State fouled USF inside the box to set up a penalty opportunity for the Dons. Aiming to convert, Jamesen Ward fired a rocket to the left side of the cage, but Hailey Coll impressed by stretching out to make a diving save and deny the equalizer.
- Despite one final attempt from Mendoza at 88:29, the Beavers held on to secure their first victory of the season, 1-0.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Leading the charge offensively, Rizzo tallied a game-high five shots, two of which were on target.
- Overall, San Francisco outshot Oregon State 23-6 overall and 8-6 in shots on goal.
- Making their USF debut, newcomers Natalie Drotzmann, Isabella Ayau, Kaitlyn Sasaduesz and Jackie Koerwitz each played meaningful minutes for the Dons on Thursday night.
