LA CRUCES, N.M. - The University of San Francisco volleyball team dropped the second match of the Borderland Invitational, falling 3-2 at New Mexico State in a five-set affair. After winning their first set, the Dons (2-3) went back and forth with the Aggies (3-1) until ultimately falling short.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Gaining an early advantage to begin the match, San Francisco scored six straight points after being tied 2-2. Astrid Puig recorded back-to-back kills to start the run, ending with a Hayden Goodman service ace to make it 8-2 in favor of the Dons.
- With the Dons leading 10-7, Kennedy Muckelroy's kill began a 4-0 run, extending the first-set lead to 17-8.
- Despite a small Aggie run near the end of the set, the Dons, led by kills from Lindsay Oldendorf and Muckelroy, secured the first set, 25-18.
- Starting the second set with renewed energy, New Mexico State won five of the first six points to gain an early advantage. The Aggies overpowered the Dons throughout the frame, winning the set with ease, 25-14
- In a tight battle during the third set, the Dons trailed the Aggies until a kill by Oldendorf evened the scoring at 8-8. Responding quickly, the Aggies regained the lead after scoring four straight points to make it 17-13.
- San Francisco rallied soon after, winning seven of the following eight points to take a 20-18 lead. Puig led the charge, accumulating three kills during the run, and Abby Wadas later secured the set, 25-22, with a service ace.
- Ezgi Ozkan tallied a service ace in a tightly contested fourth set to give the Dons a 7-6 early lead. Crystal Galaviz also contributed to the efforts during the frame, recording four kills to keep the Dons ahead, 19-18. In the final stretch, the Aggies pulled away to secure the set, 25-22.
- In the deciding fifth set, Aylen Ayub began the frame with a service ace. The Dons, however, fell behind and could not keep the upper hand for long as the Aggies won the deciding set, 15-9.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Leading San Francisco in kills, Puig finished with 11 and 13.5 points. Notably, she also recorded two solo blocks.
- Oldendorf led the team defensively, defending the frontline with three solo blocks and two block assists. Oldendorf also finished the match with a .500 hitting percentage and recorded 10 kills.
- Ayub led the Dons in assists and digs, with 19 assists and 16 digs, helping on both sides of the ball.

San Francisco concludes the Borderland Invitational at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 2, when it returns to El Paso, Texas, to face off against Arizona State at Memorial Gym.
