EL PASO, Texas – The University of San Francisco volleyball team dropped the final match of the Borderland Invitational Saturday morning, falling to Arizona State 3-1, at Memorial Gym.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- In a highly competitive first set, the Dons (2-4) and Sun Devils (5-0) battled back and forth throughout the first eight points of the frame.
- With the set tied at four, the Sun Devils began to pull away, rattling off five straight points to gain a 9-4 advantage.
- Despite a team-high two kills from Kennedy Muckelroy during the frame, the Sun Devils finished the set on a 16-11 run to secure it, 25-15.
- The Dons held a slight upper hand to begin the second set and had a four-point lead, 14-10, midway through the frame. The Sun Devils recovered quickly, evening the score at 21 later on.
- Facing match point and trailing 24-22, a solid defensive effort that forced the Sun Devils into two attack errors allowed the Dons to score three straight points to regain the lead at 25-24.
- With the set tied at 26, Crystal Galaviz and Lindsay Oldendorf finished the frame with two straight kills to give the Dons a hard-fought 28-26 win.
- Arizona State pulled ahead to start the third set, winning nine of the first 14 points and held a 9-5 advantage.
- Trailing 14-10, the Dons rattled off four straight points led by a Karolina Nova service ace to tie the set at 14. The Sun Devils, however, won five of the following six points and later held on to secure the set, 25-20.
- Multiple Sun Devil scoring runs in the fourth set doomed the Dons as the opposition led 15-8 midway through the frame. Trailing 23-15 late in the set, the Dons used a 4-0 run to cut the deficit to five before the Sun Devils won the final two points to secure the match.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Galaviz led the Dons offensively, recording a season-high 10 kills. Reaching double-digit kills in a match for the first time this season, Galaviz now ranks fifth on the team in kills.
- Muckelroy, Nova, and Oldendorf accumulated nine kills apiece, while Oldendorf led the team with a .600 hitting percentage.
- Aylen Ayub led the team with 21 assists, while Ezgi Ozkan added 15.

San Francisco returns to action at 9 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 1, when it faces off against UC Santa Barbara in the Utah Classic at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
