Dons Catch Fire in Victory Over Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, Calif – After battling UC Santa Barbara to the brink on Thursday night, the University of San Francisco women's soccer team came alive on Sunday evening as the Dons exploded for a season-high five goals to take down UC Riverside (0-4-4), 5-2, at UC Riverside Soccer Stadium.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Attacking from the start, Kaya Pigoni fired a shot on goal that was saved by Highlanders goalkeeper Cassia Souza, but Jamesen Ward proved to be in the right place at the right time as the defender scored her first goal of the season off the save to give the Dons a 1-0 lead in just the seventh minute.
  • In the minutes to follow, Jackie Koerwitz fired off two consecutive shots with the second finding the back of the net to giving the green and gold a 2-0 advantage at the 18:53 mark.
  • Subsequently, Marissa Vasquez nearly extended the San Francisco lead with a shot that hit the left post of the goal in the 21st minute as she followed with two more shot attempts in the 22nd and 28th minutes.
  • The half ended with defense as the two teams combined for only three shots attempted in the final 17 minutes of the period. Heading into into the locker room, the Dons held a halftime lead for the first time this season as USF maintained their 2-0 lead.
  • Allison Kamansky started the second period off quick, with two shots coming in the 50th and 51st minutes. Between the 55th and 64th minutes, Vasquez, Ward, and Lindsey Chau combined for five shot attempts, but couldn't find the back of the net.
  • In the 67th minute, the Highlanders took advantage of a San Francisco foul as midfielder Braelynn Llamoca scored UC Riverside's first goal of the game off of a penalty kick opportunity. Shortly after, the Highlanders were able to knot up the contest as forward Daphane Mendez scored the equalizer in the 69th minute, tying the match at 2-2.
  • Responding quickly thereafter, the Dons regained their advantage (3-2) as Jamesen Ward and Natalie Drotzmann set up Olivia Lukrofka to score the USF's third goal of the contest in the 70th minute.
  • Putting her stamp on the match, Alex Caprio scored back-to-back goals at the 80:25 and 81:11 marks off assists from Kaitlyn Sasaduesz and Ellie Weissenberg for her first goal and Marissa Vasquez on her second goal as the sophomore pushed San Francisco's lead to three, 5-2, down the stretch.
  • Although Carpio's shots would prove to be the final attempts for the Dons, UCR would be unable to find the goal in the final minutes of the second half as the Dons were able to capture their first win of the season, 5-2, on the road in Riverside.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Carpio, Ward, and Koerwitz each scored their first goals of the season, with Carpio becoming the first Don to notch a brace in a match in the 2023 campaign. Notably, these two goals in one game also marked the career-high for a single game in Carpio's collegiate career.
  • Lukrofka scored her second career collegiate goal against the Highlanders after scoring last Thursday in the draw against UC Santa Barbara.
  • Overall, six different Dons recorded assists in the match as Vasquez, Sasaduesz, Weissenberg, Ward, Drotzmann and Pigoni each set up a goal for San Francisco this evening.
UP NEXT:
After a quick trip home to the Bay Area, San Francisco will continue their four-game road stretch as they head to Tennessee to face Chattanooga on Thursday, September 14. Live streaming and live statistics links for the match will be available via the team's schedule page.
