Baseball Returns to the Hilltop, Hosts Nevada and Seattle U

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – After a successful opening series last weekend against Fairleigh Dickinson, the University of San Francisco baseball team (3-1) returns to the Hilltop to host Nevada (2-1) in a three-game series on Friday, Feb. 23 – Sunday, Feb. 25, and Seattle U (2-2) in a single game on Monday, Feb. 26, at Benedetti Diamond.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco closed last weekend with three wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, taking the series' final two games on Saturday, Feb. 17 and Sunday, Feb. 18, after earning a doubleheader split on Friday, Feb. 16.
  • Zack Ramppen shined in his first action with the green and gold, leading the Dons with five hits throughout the series, including one extra-base knock. Ramppen accumulated a .385 batting average in the team's first four games of the season and led the squad with six RBI, with three coming in the 6-3 series-clinching win last Sunday.
  • Recording three hits in seven at-bats, Jackson Nystrom accumulated a .429 batting in three games for the Dons. In the 9-7 win over FDU last Friday, Nystrom went two-for-four at the plate, recording one double and one RBI.
  • Kody Watanabe recorded the first long ball of the season, a two-run home run over the right-field wall in Sunday's 6-3 victory.
  • Starting pitching was strong throughout the weekend, with Adam Shew and Joe Soberon picking up wins on the mound. Shew had a strong outing in the season opener, pitching six solid innings and allowing just one run on four hits. Soberon also went six strong in the series finale on Sunday, allowing just one run on five hits while tallying two strikeouts in his first appearance for the green and gold.
  • As a team, 10 players recorded hits throughout the series, with four totaling three or more. San Francisco produced a .374 on-base percentage against FDU, ranking fifth-best in the WCC after the season's opening weekend. On the mound, the Dons totaled a 3.75 earned-run average, ranking second in the conference. The team had five players make appearances on the mound that did not give up an earned run to the Knights (Gabriel Barrett, Kolby Calia, Cal Amborn, Austin Cupic, and Marcelo Saldana).
SCOUTING THE WOLF PACK:
  • Nevada enters the three-game series on the Hilltop after winning its season-opening series at UC Riverside last weekend. The Wolf Pack took two of the three games, outscoring the Highlanders 32-17 throughout the series.
  • Justin Acal led the Wolf Pack offensively, recording a .545 batting average with six hits in 11 at-bats. Acal tallied four extra-base hits throughout the series, including a team-leading two home runs.
  • Jesse Pierce and Nolan Wilson also propelled Nevada offensively, combining for 12 hits and 12 RBI. Wilson, who accumulated a .429 batting average, led the team with two doubles and eight RBI.
  • Jason Doktorczyk led the pitching staff in his lone start, leading the team with a 3.18 earned-run average. Earning the win in the Wolf Pack's 12-3 victory on Friday, Feb. 16, Doktorczyk pitched 5.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits while recording a team-high eight strikeouts. 
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS:
  • Splitting its first four games of the season, Seattle U is coming off a dominating 9-5 at Pacific on Monday, Feb. 19, following dropping two of three games at UC Davis. Before traveling to take on San Francisco on Monday, Seattle U squares off at San Jose State in a three-game set on Friday, Feb. 23 – Sunday, Feb. 25.
  • In the win over the Tigers last Monday, the Redhawks scored in each of the first four innings and held a commanding 9-4 advantage midway through the contest.
  • Sam Kane led the team in the victory in Stockton, recording four hits in five at-bats with one double and three RBI. The freshman left fielder currently ranks third on the team with a .421 batting average, accumulating eight hits in 19 at-bats through the season's first four games.
  • Cole Kleckner leads the team offensively at the start, totaling 11 hits in 19 at-bats for a .579 batting average. Kleckner leads the team with three doubles and six runs scored in four games.
  • Making two appearances on the mound, Cameron Dayton leads the team with a 3.60 earned run average, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on five hits. Picking up the win in the season opener against UC Davis, Dayton pitched 2.1 innings and gave up only one run on three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Since the 2007 season, San Francisco and Nevada have faced off 19 times, with the Wolf Pack holding a narrow 11-8 advantage. The Wolf Pack are currently on a six-game winning streak over the Dons since the 2018 season and earned a 5-3 victory on the Hilltop last season.
  • Monday's meeting against Seattle U will be the first ever meeting between the two programs.
