Rola Shines as Volleyball Earns Doubleheader Sweep Over Houston Christian and UTRGV

EDINBURG, Texas – Michalina Rola recorded two double-digit kill performances as the University of San Francisco volleyball team (4-4) posted back-to-back 3-0 sweeps on Friday, defeating Houston Christian (2-5) and UTRGV (4-4) in a doubleheader to open the UTRGV Tournament at UTRGV Fieldhouse. 
 
Game One: San Francisco 3, Houston Christian 0
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Coming out strong in the first set, Maria Petkova opened the scoring for San Francisco with a service ace, setting the tone as the Dons quickly jumped out to a 7-2 advantage. Astrid Puig, Hayden Goodman, and Rola highlighted the Dons' early scoring run, as the trio totaled three kills.
  • The Dons continued to hold the momentum later in the opening frame, as the team led 19-8 following a 9-2 scoring run. Rola led the Dons through the run, posting two kills while Puig added another.
  • Petkova recorded back-to-back kills to secure the first set for the green and gold, 25-13.
  • With the second set tied at three early on, Aylen Ayub and Petkova guided the team as San Francisco rattled off four consecutive points to gain a 7-3 edge.
  • Leading 9-7, the Dons won 10 of the following 14 points to stretch their lead to seven, 18-11, with Ewing and Puig both recording a kill and a block assist.
  • Despite a late kick from the Houston Christian to get within one, 23-22, kills from Goodman and Amelia Dombrowska ended the frame at 25-22.
  • San Francisco wasted no time in the deciding set, gaining a 13-3 lead, highlighted by a six-point scoring run with Goodman recording three blocks. Goodman continued to guide the team later on, getting the Dons back to match point with a kill and Ewing ended the set 25-12 with a kill to take the 3-0 sweep. 
Game Two: San Francisco 3, UTRGV 0
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Early in the opening set, San Francisco and UTRGV traded points as the frame was tied at two. The green and gold quickly took advantage, using a 6-2 run, with kills from Ewing, Rola, and Petkova while forcing the Vaqueros into two errors, to go up 8-4.
  • Despite the Vaqueros' effort to close the deficit near the end, the Dons held out winning 25-23 from a final kill by Rola. 
  • UTRGV took the first points of the second set, but San Francisco came back to level it at 10. Going back and forth, seven total kills from Rola in the second frame led the Dons to a 25-23 victory and a two-set to-one advantage.
  • Starting with a service ace by Goodman, San Francisco got out to an 8-3 advantage with four kills coming from Ewing.
  • Continuing to dominate offensively, the Dons went on a 9-3 scoring run to make it 18-8, with Petkova producing two kills. The Vaqueros responded with their own 9-3 scoring run to come within four points of the lead, 21-17. 
  • Closing the door on UTGRV, a kill by Petkova and block assists from Ayub and Shannon Knight solidified the 25-18 set win to earn the second sweep of the day.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Rola continued to be a threat on offense as she recorded 28 kills over the two matches, with 13 against the Huskies and 15 against the Vaqueros.
  • Goodman recorded eight total blocks and scored 23 points total highlighted by 17 kills in today's doubleheader.
  • Over the two matches, Ayub tallied 70 assists as a main contributor to the attack for the Dons. 
  • As a team, the Dons recorded stellar .377 hitting percentage with 91 kills and only 14 attack errors.

San Francisco concludes the UTRGV Tournament against Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at 9:00 a.m. PT at UTGRV Fieldhouse on Saturday, Sept. 14.
